Candice Bergen was the first woman to host Saturday Night Live.

On November 8, 1975, Candice Bergen became the first female host of the weekly sketch comedy show, just a month after it premiered on October 11, 1975.

Saturday Night Live's format quickly built a loyal fan base. Each week, a celebrity host joins an award-winning ensemble cast to perform comedic sketches that often reflect current trends and satirize pop-culture moments.

Bergen went on to host SNL four more times and became the first woman to join the Five-Timers Club – the term referring to guests who host the show five times or more. Other Five-Timers include Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Drew Barrymore, Justin Timberlake, and Melissa McCarthy.

Currently in its 42nd season, Saturday Night Live continues to garner both popular praise and critical acclaim.
