Superintendent David H. Moore is pleased to announce Robert J. Stewart as the assistant superintendent for Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine located in Baltimore, Maryland and Hampton National Historic Site in Towson, Maryland.

“Robert is bringing an incredible amount of operational and partnership experience to both parks,” said Moore. “Combining this knowledge, with his passion for both sites are exactly what we need as the National Park Service looks to expand our relationships with the community and broaden the interpretive experiences.”

"I am thrilled to rejoin the team at Fort McHenry and Hampton,” said Stewart. “I look forward to strengthening and growing the park’s relationship within Baltimore and Towson, along with neighbors and members of the community, so that we can work collaboratively and creatively to make these sites more relevant, and a place where the community feels welcome. I am truly looking forward to work with this talented team of NPS professionals and our park partners.”

Robert comes to Fort McHenry and Hampton from the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument, in Wilberforce, Ohio, where he served as the superintendent since 2020. There he took on the complete ground-up restoration of the historic home of General Young, known as “Youngsholm” and the creation of an entirely new interpretive experience. While shepherding this monumental project, he developed relationships with key university, military, and non-governmental organization partners and stakeholders who provided key support for this extensive rehabilitation. Before serving as superintendent, he oversaw the development of the Interpretive and Educational Program for this new national monument as director of interpretation.

Robert’s experience in interpretive and partnership program development, began with his first appointment as a park guide at Fort McHenry and Hampton. He then went on to serve as a park ranger and eventually education specialist and acting director of interpretation at Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site in Tuskegee, AL and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail in Selma, AL. He also served as the acting director of interpretation at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Chillicothe, OH and Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg, MS.

Robert holds both a master’s degree in the field of Human Services Administration with a concentration in Special Education from University of Baltimore and Coppin State University’s collaborative program, and a Bachelor of Science in history and secondary education from Coppin State University.

Raised in Baltimore, Robert is excited to return home and to reconnect with the community, family, and friends. He has often stated that he hopes the work that he does in the NPS will help him to give back and inspire the community that helped to mold and guide him through his youth. He will be accompanied by his wife Angela, and the two are looking forward to sharing their knowledge and love of history to whomever they encounter. To the Stewarts the NPS is an organization that can not only provide enjoyment to our visitors, but it can also help to change the way our visitors see one another and the overall story of these United States.
