From the editor: We're listing our building for sale, but The Fayetteville Observer isn't going away

Beth Hutson
The Fayetteville Observer
The oldest newspaper in North Carolina isn't going away any time soon.

The Fayetteville Observer has been serving our community for more than 200 years, and though some things are changing, our commitment to quality local journalism is not.

We will soon be listing The Fayetteville Observer building for sale with the intent of leasing back space for our news, advertising, business and distribution employees.

Our building on Whitfield Street has more space than we need, and because the digital transformation of news is happening rapidly, we must be nimble and focused on what matters most as we move forward. It’s better to invest our valuable resources in the people and products that make us the leading source of news in our community. Our reporters do most of their work in the field, not in offices.

The right sale/leaseback arrangement will allow us to consolidate our operations to improve communication and collaboration, leverage currently unused office space and remain in the building.

The journalists in the newsroom will continue to work from our Whitfield Street location, and our press will continue to print 12 daily newspapers, including USA TODAY.

You can still reach us

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, our lobby closed to the public. That doesn’t mean you can’t reach us, though.
