The French Chef was the first American TV show with captioning.

On October 31,1971, The French Chef became the first American TV show to have captioning for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. This was one of several ways that this cooking show starring Julia Child was a trailblazer.

The French Chef aired from 1962-1973 and was the first cooking show on PBS. Child was one of the first women to host her own cooking show on television, and the first educational TV personality to win an Emmy.

The TV series was instrumental in making French cuisine accessible to American audiences. Born in California, Child got her start cooking in Paris, where she lived with her husband after World War II and graduated from Le Cordon Bleu.

People loved Child's sense of humor and relatable cooking goofs, which were fully on display since The French Chef was filmed in one shot and unedited. This allowed Child to show how to fix common cooking mistakes and relate more closely with her viewers.
