Kids get recess: So should grownups.

Adults have a chance to fuel their creativity and tend to their emotional well-being at Art Recess, a lunchtime art-making break sponsored by Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s Center for Creative Exploration (CCE). Participants can bring their lunch and make some art, or bring a craft they’re already working on. The first session of the 2022-23 Art Recess season will be held Friday, Sept. 30, 11:30 am to 2 pm at the Downtown Lancaster Welcome Center, Penn Square.

Those who are worried they don’t possess the “right” skills for Art Recess should worry no longer. The only skill needed, says CCE Director Natalie Lascek, is for participants to have a willingness to switch gears, take a break, and use their heads in a new way. And the only stipulation, she adds, is that it’s only for adults.

Art Recess began in 2019 prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, and after a brief pause has since continued as an opportunity for grown-ups to do something over their lunch break besides “doom scrolling at their desk.” Participants can drop in at any time during the 2.5-hour session, and can either bring a project they’ve already started or take part in that month’s CCE art project. Past Art Recess projects have included Sharpie tie-dye bandanas, baskets, collage, zines, tissue paper-and-glass luminaries, Model Magic sculptures, ornaments for Lancaster Museum of Art holiday trees, and more. Art Recess has a suggested $2 donation for materials.

Following the Sept. 30 kickoff of the new Art Recess season, upcoming Art Recess days at the Downtown Welcome Center include Oct. 28, Jan. 27, 2023; Feb. 24, 2023; March 31, 2023; April 28, 2023; and July 7, 2023. All dates run 11:30 am – 2 pm.
