Hike at Spencer Roemer Arboretum and Indian Fort Nature Preserve, Geneseo - Sunday Jun 8, 2025 @ 2:00 pm EDT (42.7913, -77.8225)
This Sunday’s hike will be in two parts! We will first explore the Spencer Roemer Arboretum (near the SUNY Geneseo campus) then head over to the Indian Fort Nature Preserve, which is a short drive from the Arboretum.
The Spencer Roemer Arboretum is in memory of Dr. Roemer who was a professor at SUNY Geneseo. He gave an endowment to the college to preserve this 20-acre area of old growth trees tucked in near the southwest corner of the campus. He wanted the students and community to forever be able to enjoy this beautiful area. The arboretum has several very old oak and black walnut trees. There are also many varieties of native plants, a 911 memorial, a bee house, pavilion and picnic area. A 0.5 mile walking path meanders throughout this very special place.
The Indian Fort Nature Preserve has several trails that wind through a 60-acre forest and is adjacent to the Genesee River. There are some very old oaks on this land, too, as well as gullies and a small pond. This land was purchased by the Genesee Valley Conservancy to preserve it for wildlife and habitat diversity. http://www.geneseevalleyconservancy.org
