About us

The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education (GGSE) at UC Santa Barbara is comprised of the Department of Counseling, Clinical & School Psychology, the Department of Education, and the Teacher Education Program. GGSE is a hub of educational innovation with world-class research produced by our distinguished faculty and exceptional graduate students who are doing leading-edge work in research methods, science and mathematics education, literacy education, second language learning, culture and language, educational policy, autism, school safety, positive psychology, resilience and recovery from trauma, and strengths-based interventions with vulnerable populations. . . and this is only a partial list of the excellent work that we do at the Gevirtz School.

  • Congratulations to Mayra Puente, Assistant Professor at the Gevirtz School Education Dept., and Dr. Verónica N. Vélez, Western Washington University, for receiving the 2024 AERA (American Educational Research Association) Division J (Postsecondary Education) Outstanding Publication Award for their co-authored article “Platicando y Mapeando: A Chicana/Latina Feminist GIS Methodology in Education Research,” published in the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education. They will receive the award in person at the annual AERA Division J meeting in Philadelphia on April 14.   • Mark your calendar! Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 5 pm - UCSB MultiCultural Center Antar Tichavakunda, Assistant Professor of Education at the UC Santa Barbara, Gevirtz School, will give a lecture drawing from his book, "Black Campus Life: The Worlds Black Students Make at a Historically White Institution." He employs Black intellectual thought and sociological theories to better understand and support marginalized communities in higher education. Event and reception will be at the UCSB MultiCultural Center, sponsored by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Please note that Winter 2024 in-person events at MCC will require masks due to the rise in COVID-19 and flu activity within the region. The MCC will provide masks to attendees on site.

  • UC Santa Barbara Gevirtz Graduate School of Education and three other universities have been awarded a four-year, $10.4 million federal contract from the U.S. Department of Education to launch and operate a national center to expand the nation’s school-based mental health workforce of school psychologists, social workers, school counselors, and other practitioners. As part of a national school mental health collaborative, UCSB along with University of Wisconsin Madison, University of South Florida, and University of Iowa will contribute school mental health expertise and resources to ensure the success of the new center called METRICS (Mental Health Evaluation, Training, Research, and Innovation Center for Schools).   • Santa Barbara Psychology Internship Consortium Offering 6 Doctoral School Psychology Intern Positions for 2024-2025! SB-PIC Santa Barbara Psychology Internship Consortium (SB-PIC) is excited to announce that we have 6 internship spots for 2024-2025 in Santa Barbara County, California, and interns can apply to any or all of the sites. These are APPIC doctoral school psychology internship opportunities (APPIC #2455). UC Santa Barbara Gevirtz Graduate School of Education’s School Psychology program is the co-leader of the SB-PIC internship. The mission of SB-PIC is to train doctoral school psychology interns dedicated to serving children and their families. All candidates who share this commitment are encouraged to apply.
