It is with great pleasure that we welcome Professor Jae Yong Suk to UC Davis! Suk joins the CLTC research team as Associate Director, and the Department of Design as an associate professor teaching lighting and daylighting design courses. Suk brings a unique background as a highly accomplished researcher, professor, and internationally recognized lighting designer, which will enhance CLTC's ongoing research, education, and demonstration activities.
To date, Professor Suk’s lighting research has focused on human factors topics including the impact of glare associated with daylighting, visual comfort, and urban lighting. Suk’s research has been widely published including journal articles for Sustainable Cities & Society, Energy & Buildings, and Building & Environment. His publications have been acknowledged with “best paper” awards from Architectural Research Centers Consortium and Passive & Low Energy Architecture.
As a professional lighting designer, Suk’s work received national recognition from the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), Professional Lighting Design Convention (PLDC), and American Institute of Architects (AIA). Suk has served as the senior lighting designer/daylighting specialist on several significant projects including the United States Courthouse in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Tom Bradley International Terminal, the Central Park at Playa Vista, and the Anacostia-Neighborhood and Tenley-Friendship Libraries in Washington, D.C.
Suk is engaged in the lighting design community as an active member of his local IES chapter and the IES Daylighting and Daylight Metrics committees. He also serves in a recurring role as an IES National Illumination Award judge. Over the years, his teaching efforts have been well received by the local IES Chapter membership in attendance, and his students have received a variety of awards for their lighting design and research efforts.
Professor Suk will be teaching Lighting Technology & Design (DES 136A) and Daylighting & Interior Design (DES 137A/137B). He will also be continuing the annual LED student design competition established by CLTC Director Michael Siminovitch at UC Davis (DES 136B). As CLTC Associate Director, Suk will be shaping the next generation of lighting research and design.
Professor Suk received a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Southern California under the direction of Professor Marc Schiler.
Dissertation Title: ‘Absolute Glare and Relative Glare Factors: Predicting and Quantifying Levels of Interior Glare and Exterior Glare Caused by Sunlight and Daylight’
Professor Suk comes to UC Davis after a distinguished career at the University of Texas San Antonio in the Department of Architecture where he led the lighting & daylighting research and education program. In addition, Suk served as the graduate advisor of record and the coordinator of a new Ph.D. program in Architecture.
