Tariro Mzezewa Named Travel Reporter

Tariro Mzezewa, who has written about topics as varied as the fall of the Victoria’s Secret empire and emerging markets, joins the Travel desk as a reporter. Read more in this note from Travel editor Amy Virshup.

“I am thrilled to announce that Tariro Mzezewa is joining the Travel desk as a reporter. Tariro joined the Times as an editorial assistant to the Op-Ed columnists Roger Cohen and David Leonhardt in 2016, and a year later was promoted to staff editor on Opinion’s Web team. Her byline has become familiar to readers of Style, whether she’s writing about the downfall of the Victoria’s Secret empire or revealing the star-making machinery behind the Aperol Spritz, and in Opinion, where she has tackled issues of race, immigration and culture, including a standout piece on her change of sides in the Kanye vs. Taylor Swift debate.

Tariro already has many stamps in her passport: She is from Zimbabwe and grew up in the Washington, D.C., area. She has an undergraduate degree from John Cabot University in Rome and a master’s from the Columbia University School of Journalism. Before joining The Times, she wrote about emerging markets for Thomson Reuters. In addition to speaking Italian, which she says she should do better, she speaks Shona and Ndebele. Her writing is smart, thoughtful and as stylish as she is. It will be fun to follow her contrails on the Travel beat.”
