The Boxer Rebellion goes fully noir in its new 1980s-inspired video for “Big Ideas,” the new single off the British band’s forthcoming album, Ocean by Ocean.
The clip was directed by Adam Avilla and follows a heroine through Los Angeles in a mystery thriller that would surely please Patrick Nagel, with animation filling in the scenery through neon-colored imagery. Ocean by Ocean is out April 29.

“This video was an exciting step into the unknown for us and was brought to life by Adam Avilla’s imagination and creativity,” the band told Billboard. “By referencing our album art direction and associations with making the record in L.A. but with a determination to try something totally different within the song’s narrative he’s delivered.”
Avilla added, explaining the clip’s creation, “Since I wanted to create this dark expansive world that the music created, I figured green screen would allow me to create every aspect of the world that the characters would live. I also experimented in digital makeup effects, which was a first for me, which also gave a surreal dream-like quality to the characters.”
