Vanderbilt University will provide up to three KN95 masks to each member of the university community who will be on campus during the first few weeks of the semester, the university announced today.
“We know that masking is one of the most important ways to stop the spread of COVID,” Vice Chancellor for Administration Eric Kopstain said. “With the omicron variant possibly reaching its peak this month, we want to make sure individuals who will be on campus over the coming weeks can receive these protective face masks without any barriers standing in their way, such as cost or access.”
The masks will be purchased from Fisher Scientific, a leading laboratory supply and biotechnology company. Individual KN95 masks are reusable up to 40 hours of wear and should be replaced when visibly soiled, damaged or if breathing becomes difficult. Masks should be worn as tight-fitting as possible by adjusting the nosepiece and/or ear straps when possible.
Certain groups that are working in high-contact situations will receive masks directly, including those working with children and campus facilities. Students will either receive the masks at their campus residence or at their school’s dean’s or departmental office. Faculty, staff and postdoctoral fellows working in schools and units can access masks through their main offices.
Masks are always required indoors on campus, except when eating or drinking or alone in an enclosed office. Physical distancing should be practiced when possible, such as when eating or drinking and when outdoors.
