Greetings Big Red family!
So, what is a red thread? I’ve heard several origin stories of the red thread:
- an ancient Chinese proverb about how we are uniquely connected to those we will meet
- a thread woven into naval ropes to identify them with their home port, and
- a Greek myth about a hero conquering a monster residing within a labyrinth with only a sword and a red thread to show the way home.
No matter the actual origin story, there are elements of each that resonate: connection, identification, and finding our way. In my first year as Athletics Director, I have been mining for red threads - throughlines - that tell the story of who we have been, and that can illuminate where we must go. Love, grit, belief, relationships … these are some of the things that Big Red student-athletes through the ages are made of.
We have planned to begin a weekly message throughout the school year to our most loyal alumni, friends and fans, and it has been wanting for a name. It occurred to us that “Big Red Threads” might be the perfect fit. We hope it will keep us all connected to the thing that connects us all -- Big Red Athletics. By highlighting sport program updates, special events, and Big Red stories, we'll connect where we've been, where we are and where we're going - together.
We’re excited to share the many exciting things going on in Athletics and Physical Education this year, and I hope you'll enjoy the journey, and be inspired yourself to win, to be well, to show your Big Red spirit, and to lead with love in all you do!
