An update from the Office of the Vice Chair of Education - John T. Milliken Department of Medicine

The world of academic medicine is one that is always in motion, and spring marks the time of year when everything seems to go twice as fast as usual. It is always a remarkable experience to observe our program leaders as they delve into the monumental tasks of onboarding a new class of trainees while simultaneously preparing to celebrate the accomplishments of their graduates. It truly gives insight into the effort and dedication our teams put forward and, more importantly, showcases the collegiality that is paramount to the success of medical education within our department.

I am honored to be a part of a department and institution that places so much value on the education and training of future generations of physicians, and on the faculty and staff working tirelessly to keep our educational systems in motion. These dedicated individuals are the backbone of our students’ and trainees’ experiences at WashU. Without them, we could never offer the quality education for which we are known. With that, I offer a heartfelt kudos to all our amazing leadership team members for their hard work and dedication!

Welcome New Leaders

Congratulations to Dr. Prashanth Thakker who was recently appointed as the new Program Director for the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program! Dr. Thakker succeeds Dr. Andy Kates, who served as the program’s director for the last 16 years.

Academy of Educators Teaching Excellence Series

The Teaching Excellence Series is a 5-part series that will equip educators with practical tips, tricks, and best practices to help deliver more effective teaching in the classroom, at the bedside, in non-clinical settings and via Zoom. Academy of Educators BUILD Workshop Series

BUILD offers health professions faculty the knowledge, skills, and resources to understand the barriers facing people and learners with disabilities and to create more inclusive didactic and clinical learning environments. Topics in this 3-session series addresses the history and different models of disability, barriers and challenges presented by ableism, and stigma in community and educational settings.

Accepting Applications: Internal Medicine Clerkship Assistant Director

The Department of Medicine is seeking an Assistant Clerkship Director (AsCD). The AsCD will work with the Internal Medicine Clerkship Director, Associate Director, and Manager to implement curriculum, assessment, and faculty development within the Internal Medicine Clerkship and will be provided 0.1 FTE for their efforts. Successful candidates will have demonstrated an interest in medical education with aspirations to further develop their leadership and medical education skills.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, their curriculum vitae, and – if desired – their clinician educator portfolio by Friday, May 10, 2024. Invitations for interviews with Department of Medicine leadership will follow.

Academy of Educators Teaching Scholars Program

The Teaching Scholars Program is a certificate program designed to enhance knowledge and skills, and develop future leaders in healthcare education with a focus on core components of educational scholarship and curriculum development. The program consists of twice-monthly seminars held on the Washington University Medical Campus during the academic year, a curriculum needs assessment, design, or evaluation project completed under faculty mentorship/ guidance, and a capstone presentation event. Topics covered include all phases of curriculum and instruction development, design, and evaluation as viewed within a framework of educational research/scholarship of teaching & learning.
