RPS Direct Newsletter

Stay up-to-date with everything happening in RPS! Sign up for the RPS Direct, our daily newsletter straight from the desk of Superintendent Kamras!

RPS Direct is regularly distributed to over 36,000 stakeholders across the Richmond Public Schools Community, and is read by nearly 20,000 recipients daily. We welcome submissions from the Richmond community that are family-centered and geared towards children ages 0-18. External opportunities must be accessible to all families, i.e. free of cost (or offer financial assistance) and be accessible via public transportation. Events inside of Richmond are prioritized. Each event must be accompanied by a flier clearly stating the financial cost, or a website link where it is available on the home page. Additionally, content deemed appropriate for RPS Direct will typically appear in the publication one to three times, depending on the lead time, as well as a number of other factors. 

Upon review, scholarship and employment opportunities for students will be featured on the RPS Opportunities Hub, which is routinely spotlighted as a resource in RPS Direct. Please forward all scholarship and employment opportunities to: opportunity@rvaschools.net.

Due to the amount of content shared and sourced via RPS Direct, most events will not run in Direct until 2-5 days prior. To have an event or community resource considered for RPS Direct, please send an email with the subject line: RPS Direct Submission to: outreach@rvaschools.net. Timing and inclusion of all submissions is at the discretion of the RPS Communications team.

School Board Meeting – The School Board will hold an in-person meeting tonight at 6 pm at City Hall (17th Floor Board Room). You can watch the livestream of the meeting in English or Spanish. Please note that I won't be in attendance, as I'll be observing the first night of Passover. To all who celebrate, Chag Pesach Sameach!
 

Administrative Professionals Week – Happy Administrative Professionals Week! Join us as we recognize the professionals who keep our schools and offices running smoothly every day. Our administrative professionals are often the first face many families see when they enter a school building or the first voice they hear when they call central office. We're eternally grateful for each and every one of them. Help us spread the love to those who #ServeWithLove – email your administrative professional shout-outs to shoutouts@rvaschools.net! 
 

School Librarian Spotlight – For Huguenot HS Librarian Elizabeth Layne, it was the cultural experiences she gained from reading that influenced her to become a French teacher, an ESL teacher, and finally a librarian. "I believe all types of people and places should be in books and in every library so that everyone feels represented and has the opportunity to learn about those who are different from themselves...I love 'The Only Road' by Alexandra Diaz because it shows what kids may go through when migrating to the US from Guatemala or similar places. Books like this increase empathy and understanding."

School Librarian Spotlight – April is School Library Month so we're highlighting some of our fabulous school librarians! For Cardinal ES Librarian Lindsey Ribble, one of the best things about books is that they can offer both "window" and "mirror" experiences to readers. "Sometimes you need to see your own experience reflected back at you and sometimes you need to be able to look into the world of someone else. If there aren't enough diverse characters or perspectives or authors, there's no room for growth and not everyone is able to have the mirror that they may need." When asked which literary character she relates to the most, she shared: "I've always loved Roald Dahl, so as a child I think I really identified with Matilda and her love of reading and learning (and I always wished I could read enough to get her magic!). These days, I think I can identify with her teacher, Ms. Honey, since I now get to encourage a love of learning and reading with my students every day."

Dear #RPSStrong Family,

I'm devastated to share that we lost two more students to gun violence this weekend. That makes four fatalities just since Easter. Please join me in extending our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the young people we lost.

As I shared during this morning's press conference, since 2019, 169 young people have been shot in our city – and 43 of them have died. I ask you to pause for a moment and really take that in. It's simply staggering.
