Fairfax, Va. -- A record 68 Peter N. Stearns Provost Scholar Athletes were honored in a ceremony on Tuesday evening for their outstanding academic achievements.
In its 16th year, the award recognizes the student-athletes who have earned at least 38 credit hours at Mason and have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or better. More than 60 student-athletes earned the award this year. George Mason Assistant VP/Director of Athletics Marvin Lewis congratulated this year's recipients at the ceremony.
"I am thankful for the Provost's Office for honoring the student-athletes performing at a high level in the classroom, while managing their commitment to their sport," said Marvin Lewis. "This group of student-athletes is special and represents our best and brightest. The Provost Scholars are honing the skills and habits that will last a lifetime, and set them apart from their peers."
Mason student-athletes have posted a department GPA that has exceeded the general population for nine consecutive years. In 2021-22, Mason had 11 teams with a cumulative team GPA of 3.30 or higher, including three teams with a 3.50 GPA or higher. This season, the Patriots had 19 teams represented, plus the cheer and dance teams. The previous high was 65 honorees in 202-21.
There were 43 first-time honorees and 26 student-athletes who have received the award before. Eleven student-athletes have been named Provost Scholar Athletes at least three times – including two four-year recipients, Jack Bolz (men's volleyball) and Jester Hutchinson (cheer).
