Graduating veterans gathered with their families to celebrate and be recognized for their accomplishments ahead of their upcoming graduation from The University of Texas at Arlington.

The Office of Military and Veteran Services hosted the fifth annual Veteran Grads’ Luncheon to honor the nearly 135 veterans graduating this week at UTA commencement ceremonies, scheduled for Friday at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Nearly 5,000 military-connected students attend UTA; 2,100 of them are veterans, on active duty or members of the National Guard or Reserve. The remaining 2,900 are military children or spouses. Last year, UTA was named a top 10 Military Friendly® School and was also designated as a Military Spouse Friendly School. UTA is ranked No. 1 in both the Southwest and Texas and No. 4 nationally on the Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges 2022 list.

“This event is my favorite event out of the whole year because we get to celebrate all of you,” said James Kumm, executive director of Military and Veteran Services. “This is a milestone that has resulted from many years of hard work and commitment.”

Sawyer Howard, an Air Force veteran, said he received critical support and encouragement from UTA. He is graduating with a degree in business management and has plans to continue working in higher education.

“I made a decision to take a break from school during my higher education career, but they kept reaching out to me to make sure I stayed on track, and they supported me the whole time,” Howard said.

Tamara Brown, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs, told students she expects them to continue thriving in civilian life.

“I want to be here to celebrate you and express my profound gratitude,” Brown said. “You have a lot to be proud of, and I hope you are proud of yourself and your accomplishments.”
