Grades 6-12 Intent to Return Survey

students arriving at bothell high school

The Grades 6-12 Intent to Return Survey is now closed.

Northshore School District educators are excited to begin welcoming students back to our buildings and classrooms for those families choosing the hybrid learning option.

We would like to gather additional information about your intentions for your 6-12 students and our learning models. Please review the descriptions below of activities and learning models to help guide your planning and response to our Intent to Return survey at the bottom of this page. Please complete one survey for each 6-12 student in your household.

Middle and high schools offer many courses that include prerequisite content for future classes.  Credit-bearing courses must meet certain requirements.  To ensure Northshore’s secondary students will be prepared for their next grade level or to graduate, the secondary hybrid model will include different features than the elementary model.

Key Definitions for Reopening

There are two learning and service delivery model choices for Northshore's Secondary students: Fully-Remote or Hybrid In-Person

The 100% Remote Learning and Service Delivery Model:

  • The 100% Remote Learning schedule will be similar to our current learning model for each day of the week.
  • Part of each school day will include synchronous (live) instruction, and part of each school day will include asynchronous instruction and independent work time.
  • Students will learn from home every day of the week.
  • Students will have the same teachers, classmates, lessons, learning activities, and class schedules as they do now.
  • Group A, Group B, and 100% Remote students will be taught at the same time.
  • Students will continue to access their classes through Schoology and Zoom.
  • Some adjustments to special services delivery times may be made.
  • An emphasis on building relationships and classroom community will continue to occur.

The Hybrid Learning and Service Delivery Model:

  • Students will spend two days on campus and three days at home.
  • Students will be placed into Monday/Tuesday (A) or Thursday/Friday (B) groups for their in-person days on campus.  Due to the complexity of a secondary student’s schedule, there will be no choice regarding group assignments, except due to valid academic, medical, or social emotional reasons.
  • Students will have the same teachers, classmates, lessons, learning activities, and class schedules as they do now.
  • Group A (Monday/Tuesday), Group B (Thursday/Friday), and 100% Remote students will be taught at the same time.
  • Students whose teachers are teaching classes remotely will be in classrooms supervised in-person by District employees.
  • All lessons and learning activities will be provided for students by their current teachers.
  • Students will continue to access their classes through Schoology and Zoom.
  • Students will be on computers with headphones for their Live Zoom instruction.
  • School supplies, including charged devices and power cords, materials, projects, text books, etc. must be transported to and from school on each in-person day.
  • Some adjustments to special services delivery times may be made.
  • An emphasis on building relationships and classroom community will continue to occur.
  • Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) testing may occur during in-person times and any SBAC testing schedule will be based upon the outcome of OSPI’s application of an assessment and accountability waiver to the U.S. Department of Education.
  • English language proficiency testing may occur during students' in-person days as required by OSPI.

As students are welcomed back to campus, lessons will be shared to help everyone learn how to navigate campuses, follow health and safety protocols, and support hybrid learning.  For students returning to in-person instruction as part of the hybrid model, it is important to remember that health and safety protocols will mean:

  • Health checks will occur daily, and students and staff will participate in regular COVID testing.
  • Face masks must be worn at all times, except when eating or drinking.
  • Physical distancing must be maintained and time when large groups gather (e.g., passing times in hallways, social time in cafeteria or commons, etc.) will be minimized.
  • Meals will be “grab and go” and lunch periods will not be held.
  • Air circulation will be prioritized, with windows and doors open to increase air circulation.

Our team will continue to plan and communicate additional elements of our reopening plans as decisions are finalized. Any changes made to your student’s schedule will be reflective of the needs of our students and staff and to ensure staffing of both the hybrid and 100% remote instructional groupings in each building. An emphasis on building relationships and classroom community will occur as students transition to their hybrid group or their 100% remote learning group.

Thank you for your continued support, patience and partnership as we navigate this transition. Our team is committed to maintaining a high level of instructional support, relationship and connection for your students in both hybrid and remote learning models. Your students will be integral, valued members of their school communities in both of these learning groups. We will provide you updated information related to classroom placements and instructional staffing after building leaders have had an opportunity to review intent to return data and develop grouping plans.

Watch Dr. Reid and Dr. Tracy Meloy discuss the reopening plan. Discussion about secondary begins at 10:45.
