Hear Kalsey Kulyk’s Forlorn ‘Love Somebody’ Premiere

Canadian country upstart Kalsey Kulyk laments the time wasted on a romantic lost cause in “Love Somebody,” her new track premiering on Sounds Like Nashville today (August 23).

Built on a soul-shattering epiphany of introspection, the standout track features Kulyk’s forlorn vocal twang and a lethargic banjo — perfectly mimicking a heart that’s almost ready to stop beating entirely. Co-written with Rocky Block and Jeff Garrison, the Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan native and childhood cancer survivor somehow channels the stuck-in-the-middle grief of being a few years deep into a flawed relationship, and trying to understand why you can’t admit it’s a lost cause.

“‘Love Somebody’ was written about being in the wrong relationship, and fighting for it,” Kulyk explains. “‘Fighting for okay, baby / That’s no way to love somebody.’ Who hasn’t been in one of those relationships? The kind that just feels wrong — but you stay in it because you ‘love’ the person.”

Part of her debut, self-titled album due on August 30, “Love Somebody” was produced Oran Thornton and actually written after the project was supposedly “complete.” Ultimately, it was too good to leave off, so she went back and added it alongside tracks like the quick-fire sarcasm of her current single, “Bad Liar.” Put together, she figures the seven tracks trace her path from Canada, to Las Vegas with former Fleetwood Mac producer Richard Dashut and finally, to her new musical home in Nashville.

“’I’m so proud that the buttons on my shirt burst,'” she says. “That’s something my dad would say, but it stands true when I think about this album finally being released. A lot of time, tears and thought have been put into it, and I almost can’t believe it’s here! This album is for the dreamers, believers and feelers.”
