The Alliance is a progressive group of University of Waterloo staff & students working together to use their voices and platforms to create change within the Waterloo network.
Mission: To establish positive systemic changes for the University of Waterloo BIR community through recognition of, education towards, and action against racism.
Vision: Actively striving to lead by example, providing direction and inspiration to all community members to create change in a relentless pursuit of equity for all.

The Alliance supports the We Are One United Against Racism Campaign and thanks the student-athletes who were brave enough to share their experiences. Your message does not fall on deaf ears and we will work to ensure changes are made.

The Alliance is guided by four non-negotiable principles: Respect, Integrity, Community & Growth.
- Respect: All members of the Alliance are confident that their thoughts and behaviors are heard and respected.
- Integrity: All our discussions and actions are guided by honesty and strong moral principles.
- Community: All members of the Alliance feel a shared sense of belonging, inclusion, and responsibility.
- Growth: All of us have a responsibility to listen, learn, educate, and work together towards the goal of ending racism.

- Monthly meetings with guest speakers leading discussion on racism.
- Student led focus groups discussing numerous racism related topics.
- Department wide audit to examine racial discrepancies.
- Collaborating with other groups on campus (PART, UWBASE)

- Learn to swim, learn to skate programs for at risk youth
- Fundraising initiatives
- Professional development day to educate full time staff
- Creating mandatory Anti-racism training modules for student athletes & staff
- Collaborating with other groups on campus (RAISE, BFC)

About the Artist
Trisha Abe is a local KW artist and UWaterloo alumni. Her works can be seen all across the province and the area including downtown Kitchener and St. Jacob’s market. Her work is influence by female portraiture and often represent people of diverse background. Trisha is a former student-athlete from UWaterloo. She studied science at UW and since graduation has delved into her creative outlets.

Student BIR Awards
The Alliance believes actions speak louder than words. The group is focussed on change and eliminating racism on our campus and in our world. They will listen, learn, and educate through a series of conversations.
Change starts with the individual; it then transcends to all of us as a community. Together we can make our world a better place to live and thrive. Silence is not an option.
