Here are the finalists for MBJ's 25th annual Health Care Heroes awards.

Doctors, nurses, and other health care practitioners are there at some of the best and worst moments of our lives — when babies are born, when pain is relieved, when we learn our loved ones are gravely ill or have died.

We place our physical and mental burdens into their care. We place our trust in them and give them our hopes and fears.

And this is why, for a quarter century, Memphis Business Journal has honored health care practitioners and professionals in our annual Health Care Heroes awards.

The awards are broken down into categories — Administrative Excellence, Community Outreach, Health Care Innovations, Health Care Provider-Physician, and Health Care Provider-Non-Physician. A Lifetime Achievement honor will also be presented to one local individual for their years of service and dedication in their field.

There's one big difference in this year's awards versus the past few years. After the pandemic began, MBJ had rolled out each of the honoree profiles weekly from July to December. But the 2023 installment sees a return to the pre-pandemic form: The finalists will be featured in the Aug. 11 weekly edition of MBJ. And then we will celebrate all of the honorees and name the category winners at an in-person event on Thursday, Aug. 17, at The Kent in Uptown.

First Horizon is the Presenting Sponsor of the 2023 Health Care Heroes, and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is the Gold Sponsor.

One thing that is certainly the same as past years: The Health Care Heroes reflect the staggering skill, intellect, compassion, and dedication of Memphis' medical industry. And they represent everyone from the hugest organizations — such as Baptist Memorial Health Care, Le Bonehur Children's Research Hospital, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, Regional One Health, Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center — to the private practices, nonprofits, insurance programs, and entrepreneurial firms that keep the city healthy.
