This chapter surveys elaborative encoding as a tool for enhancing learning in online environments. By connecting to-be-learned information to learners' pre-existing knowledge, elaborative encoding facilitates deeper understanding and better retention of materials ranging from simple to complex. Research on elaborative encoding has explored various methods applicable to online learning environments; five will be examined here: elaborative interrogation, self-explanation, use of the self-reference effect, use of analogies, and etymological elaboration. The chapter shares practical ideas to encourage elaborative encoding in learners, considering both synchronous and asynchronous elements. The goal is to equip instructors with effective techniques to foster meaningful and memorable learning in their online learning environments.
