Tobacco Users Can Reduce Their State Health Plan Premium

State Health Plan

If you are a tobacco user and want to reduce your State Health Plan premium by $60 a month in 2023, you don’t need to wait until annual enrollment. You can take action now.

Through Nov. 30, tobacco users can attend a free tobacco cessation counseling session at a CVS MinuteClinic or a primary care provider’s office to earn their $60 wellness credit. If you completed a session last year or earlier this year and have continued to use tobacco products, you must complete another session in order to earn your wellness credit for 2023.

This action is only for tobacco users who want to reduce their monthly premium in 2023. If you are not a tobacco user, you will simply need to attest to that online during annual enrollment to reduce your monthly premium. Nonusers of tobacco must complete attestation each year to get the wellness credit.

Make a Plan To Complete Your Tobacco Counseling Session

Read the information below to learn your options for completing a tobacco cessation visit.

CVS MinuteClinic

You don’t have to make an appointment for a tobacco cessation counseling session. Keep in mind CVS MinuteClinics are not located in all 100 counties of North Carolina, and their hours vary. Check now to see if there is a location near you.

Validation of the completion of your session should be automatic via your claims submission, but be sure to save the summary of your visit just in case you are asked to provide documentation. You also can upload your documentation to the eBenefits system as soon as you complete your visit.

In late January, you will be notified if your wellness credit couldn’t be validated. At that time, you will need to provide documentation to prove you earned the credit.

Primary Care Provider

Contact your primary care provider and ask if the office offers tobacco cessation services. If your provider does not offer that service, you’ll need to find a provider who does.

Schedule an in-person or virtual appointment. We recommend scheduling an appointment to ensure you complete a tobacco cessation session by Nov. 30.

If you combine your tobacco cessation visit with another service, you may have to pay a copay.
