Q:
Is the European hot chocolate gluten free? (I see that mix they sell is gluten-free)
A:
Yes it's gluten free. Dandelion uses only three ingredients for their European Hot Chocolate recipe: whole milk, light brown sugar and 70% chef's chocolate. With these ingredients, their Hot Chocolate is naturally gluten free.

This is the best chocolate drink I've had, and I love all things chocolate. The rich chocolate flavor in the frozen hot chocolate is unmatched to any other chocolate in the city.
Such a great experience and vibe in the store. There is also samples of chocolate sprinkled towards the sides of the store and you can really try 20+ different types of chocolate! Plus, there is a community board that has some events they host like chocolate making and whatnot.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 4380143May 13, 2024
I love hot chocolate for almost any occasion so I had to try it here! I feel like the house chocolate was thin and could be thicker but I think that's my personal preference. I was expecting ultra thick chocolate that I've had before, so this chocolate is probably actually really thick than normal hot chocolate.
I'm bummed they don't sell their mugs anymore. I was hoping to get one as they are so comfy to hold.
Ok, I love how they have marshmallows to add on the side counter! Amazing!
It was super busy in the afternoon, basically no seating. Great to take to go if needed.Helpful 1Thanks 2Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 28, 20241 check-in
Dandelion Chocolate offers a unique experience for chocolate lovers, with in-house production, single-origin chocolate drinks, and even chocolate-making classes. The highlight of the visit was definitely the free samples - trying different dark chocolates from around the world while waiting in line was a fun way to explore their offerings. They forgot my order, and I had to remind them after waiting for 15 minutes (when I saw folks who ordered after me get their drinks before me)
The Florentine, a chocolate sandwich with an orange and lavender-scented almond cookie, was a miss. The cookie wasn't crispy, which is a key element of the Florentine experience. However, they did redeem themselves with the Canele, a delightful rum-infused custard with a caramelized shell. It was perfectly gooey and delicious.
The European drinking chocolate was another highlight - thick, hot, and rich, perfect for dark chocolate enthusiasts. It even came with a complimentary cookie, which was a nice touch.
Overall, Dandelion Chocolate has some interesting concepts and delicious elements like the Canele and drinking chocolate. However, the lack of crispness in the Florentine and the focus on dark chocolate might limit the appeal for some. If you're a die-hard dark chocolate fan who wants to experience unique chocolate creations, Dandelion Chocolate might be worth a try.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - May 5, 2024
We got the European drinking chocolate, and it was really really very pleasant. It's thick, rich, and not overly sweet. There's a depth of flavor that you wouldn't get from your typical Swiss Miss. The small might be only 4 oz., but we shared and were satisfied. And the little chocolate biscuit on the side managed to be chocolatey in a different enough way, without being generic. I feel like a prince of yore. Definitely worth a try. I'm curious about the cacao fruit smoothie for next time, though I'm sure I'll be conflicted, wanting to return to the knowably delightful.

The mother shop of Dandelion Chocolate. Immersed in the warm wood and jazz music, the vibe is awesome in the morning (weekday. My favorites are the House Hot Chocolate, European Drinking Chocolate (when I need an intense shot) and the Frozen Hot Chocolate (if it's hot outside).
The samples are tempting. No better hot chocolate in the City - get to Dandelion asap!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Jan 12, 2013Previous reviewJust by chance after lunch, I stumbled upon a Friends & Family day at Dandelion as they were testing out their menu and surveying customers on the experience.
First: the space -
The large warehouse feels like a good - woodsy natural fit for the neighborhood. The walls by the entrance display information about the origins of the chocolate that they source, books and packages of Kika treats (yum). They had small crystal dishes with chocolate shards of the three varieties (Rio Caribe, Madagascar, and Dominican Republic) that you can sample. Very pretty display. They'll have their chocolate bars on these shelves when the shop is fully open.
Seating is a bit tight with a few tables by the entrance, a short amount of counter space by the espresso machine, a longer stand-up bar area towards the back where you overlook the workspace/kitchen and also some small counter by the front window facing the street.
The food scene -
At the counter, you can order from their drink menu (see long chalkboard menu on the wall) either hot (3 types)/cold chocolate, coffee and other beverages. The display case has a few food offerings: chocolate bundt-style cake, cornmeal vanilla madelines, a tiny tiny chocolate brownie cupcake and chocolate hazelnut pralines candy.
I'm a bit obsessed by chocolate candy so I bought several of the praline candies and found the smooth ganache center with bits of crunchy crispy bits encased in a hard chocolate shell to be excellent. The cornmeal vanilla madeline that I sampled was light and subtely vanilla-y. They offer complimentary very yummy, mini-marshmallows to add to your chocolate drinks at the side bar.
Certainly, this shop is working out its kinks in terms of operations and menu. I like the feel of the place and they're working towards making high quality chocolate products for all of San Francisco and the world beyond. Bravo to that. I look forward to returning to sampling their chocolate drinks and food again soon. - Apr 23, 2024
Everything is fantastic, from the bars (single-origin, distinctive and out of this world) to their cakes (buttery crusts, deep chocolate tastes) to their atmosphere (nice wood paneling, pleasant seating/volume to their coffees. Worth the trip, and to take home and give many bars. Also especially appreciative that you can sample their goods with tiny pieces, which definitely encouraged consumption...

Took a tour here where the highlight was the cacao fruit they actually cracked open for us and allowed us to try fresh. I was fascinated with the texture and taste. I haven't had anything like it before but apparently it's similar to a custard apple. Afterwards we got a voucher for a free drink so I had to try the cacao fruit smoothie. Literally maybe my favorite smoothie I've ever had. Tropical but tart, sweet but not heavy, almost creamy? I guess if it tastes like a custard apple then I know where the custard part of that name comes from. Such a unique drink and I enjoyed it immensely

Dandelion Chocolate was rated as the number one spot to get hot chocolate in the Bay Area during the winter holiday season. After trying their famous hot chocolate, I agree it was one of the best I had ever tasted. My husband, who was not into sweet things, loved their hot chocolate too. I loved that they also added a small pastry to the side of the cup so you could enjoy a nice, sweet treat while drinking the beverage.
My first time coming here was for their chocolate pastries. I personally love brownies so I enjoyed their brownie samplers. The second time I came was when I tried the hot chocolate which was delicious. My husband ordered their cacao fruit smoothie, which tasted like mangosteen. It was refreshing!
The last time we came, we tried all three of their hot chocolate on the menu: house hot chocolate, mission hot chocolate, and the European- drinking chocolate. My favorite was still their house hot chocolate, which tasted like melted chocolate that was not too dense. The mission hot chocolate had a spiced kick as described on their menu. The European-drinking chocolate reminded me of the breakfast drink in Barcelona, where they dip churros into a super dense hot chocolate. They were all very good in their own way but I much preferred the house hot chocolate, which was smooth and easy to drink. The worker also recommended the peanut butter brownie cake, which was most similar to a lava cake in their opinion. Although it did not taste like a lava cake, the dessert itself was good!
The workers were always very attentive and kind. This place got packed fast and it seemed like a lot of customers enjoy hanging out here for a late coffee drink at night. They also had samples of chocolate on the wall from all over the world so you could try before purchasing! Great ambiance, highly recommend this spot in the Mission!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 18, 2024
The perfect post-dinner spot to grab something warm and sweet on a cold winter night. Bless their late store hours!
My friend and I visited a week ago and we haven't stopped raving about it. I got the Mission Hot Chocolate and her the Frozen Hot Chocolate. The rich chocolate flavor and texture stood out to us immediately and the drinks weren't too sweet. I really enjoyed the spices in the mission hot chocolate; it was a nice added kick. The frozen hot chocolate was equally as delicious and they gave so much whipped cream! The two of us also turned this stop into a little activity by sampling their chocolates. There's a variety of chocolates to try and learn about.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0
