The H. George Frederickson Award

The Public Management Research Association is pleased to name Donald F. Kettl, Professor Emeritus at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, as winner of the 2023 H. George Frederickson Award.

In making this award, the committee writes that the purpose of the Frederickson Award is to honor a senior scholar for exemplary contributions to the intellectual development of the field. Don Kettl clearly meets this standard through his written scholarship, his service to PMRA, and his leadership over the last 40 years, as the letter of nomination highlights. 

Don was on the original board of the Public Management Research Association and helped shape its purpose and mission. He also co-hosted the 1992 PMRC at the University of Wisconsin, helping to set a high bar for the PMRA conferences that followed.

Don is one of the most prolific, insightful, and highly cited scholars in public management with 17,000+ Google Scholar citations, advancing the literature of public administration.  Over his 40+ accomplished years, Don published more than 30 books and monographs: Many have been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, and Macedonian.  His scholastic contributions have led him to receive the 2022 winner of the ASPA Dwight Waldo Award for outstanding contributions to the professional literature of public administration over an extended career. He was the 2008 winner of the APSA John Gaus Award for a lifetime of exemplary scholarship in the joint tradition of political science and public administration. He was the 2007 winner of the Warner W. Stockberger Achievement Award given by the International Public Management Association for Human Resources for outstanding contributions in the field of public sector personnel management. And he was the 1998 winner of the ASPA-NASPAA Charles H. Levine Memorial Award in recognition of his contributions to research, teaching, and service to the broader community (1998).

Don also has been a true leader. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, served on the ASPA and NASPAA national councils and was the Dean of School of Public Policy at University of Maryland. Don’s service, scholastic and leadership contributions made him fully deserving of the 2022 H. George Frederickson Award for Career Contributions to Public Management Research.

The H. George Frederickson Award honors a senior scholar for career contributions to the field of public management.  Exemplary contributions include, but are not limited to, adding to the intellectual development of the field and building professional capital (e.g., journal development and other means of sharing PM scholarship and information) related to public management research.
