More Mt. Juliet and La Vergne residents have access to the nation's highest Internet speeds being provided by TDS Telecom, which services both cities.

TDS is calling its service 1Gig Internet, which the company says is about 100 times faster than the national average of approximately 10 megabits per second.

"Having 1 gigabit really opens up new possibilities for telecommuting," said Matt Apps, manager of Internet Product Management and Development at TDS. "The technology makes it possible for people to enjoy all the benefits of living in a smaller community while working for an employer based in a larger nearby city."

TDS Telecom is making the 1Gig service available as part of its TDS TV bundle that had previously been available in only limited parts of Mt. Juliet but is being expanded.

"When you have areas that have high-speed networks, it makes it more attractive," Mt. Juliet Commissioner Brian Abston said. "One is for businesses; they are more apt to locate where there is high speed availability. And these times a lot of people work from their homes. It's good for everybody."
