IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS RESEARCH PROJECT
The research team above is conducting a research study about assessing barriers and facilitators for young adults (age 18-30) with foster care experience to pursue and finish college education.  The objective of this project is to use the findings to inform the development and piloting of an intervention program to increase college graduation rates among young adults with foster care experience. You can choose to participate in this research study if you are a UTA student aged 18-30 and have lived or are currently living in foster care.

You might want to participate in this study if you want to share your educational expectations and experience as a young adults with foster care experience with researchers from UTA. However, you might not want to participate in this study if you are uncomfortable sharing your personal experiences with researchers.

This study has been reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB). An IRB is an ethics committee that reviews research with the goal of protecting the rights and welfare of human research subjects. Your most important right as a human subject is informed consent.  You should take your time to consider the information provided by this form and the research team, and ask questions about anything you do not fully understand before making your decision about participating.

TIME COMMITMENT
You will be asked to complete one online survey and/or one virtual or phone interview between June 2023 and December 2024. Each survey will take 15 minutes. Each interview should take between 30 and 60 minutes and will be scheduled at your convenience.

RESEARCH PROCEDURES
If you decide to participate in this research study, we will ask you to complete an online survey and/or to complete an interview in person or via Microsoft Teams. It should take about 15 minutes to complete the survey, and 30-60 minutes to complete the interview. You can decide to participate in either of survey and interview, or both.

All survey will be conducted on QuestionPro, an online survey platform. All interviews will be recorded via Microsoft Teams. Once the interview is complete, the researcher conducting the interview (one of the researchers listed on this protocol) will send the recording to a professional transcription company and will upload the recording to a private encrypted OneDrive folder, accessible only by those on this protocol with a unique email and password. Once the transcription is received, the PI will be responsible for deleting the audio recording. The PI will delete the recording as soon as the transcription is received, and will read through the transcription to de-identify any names or places that could identify an individual participant. The de-identified transcript will be uploaded by the PI to the private OneDrive folder.

All information from interviews and surveys will be summarized and reported in aggregate form to maintain confidentiality. No identifying information is asked on the survey or interview. Any names or locations that could potentially pose a risk to confidentiality will be de-identified (e.g., a pseudonym will be assigned) by the PI when reviewing each transcript.

POSSIBLE BENEFITS
Your participation will contribute to the knowledge on barriers and facilitators for young adults with foster care experience to pursue and finish college education, which will help us develop an intervention program to increase college enrollment and graduation rates among young adults with foster care experience. There are no other direct benefits.

POSSIBLE RISKS/DISCOMFORTS
The main potential risk to the participants is psychological distress due to the nature of the questions on the survey and interview. You may skip any questions you feel uncomfortable answering. If you feel uncomfortable, you can withdraw at any point in time. If you experience psychological distress, you are encouraged to contact the Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) at UTA and/or the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) website on this link and/or hotline

In addition, in the event that you express need of life skills training, case management, workforce services, crisis intervention, or housing, we will refer you to Transition Resource Action Center (TRAC) that provides such services to young adults with foster care experience. You can read about TRAC services on this link.

Another potential risk is undue influence that may occur when you are referred to the research team by an authority figure (e.g. judge, case worker). To minimize risks of undue influence, all recruitment will be done by research personnel. Information about individual participation will not be shared with anyone outside of this research project, such as your judge or case worker.

COMPENSATION
If you complete our survey online, you will be entered to a drawing to win one of thirty $30 Target gift cards. You can also complete our interview in person or via Microsoft Teams and receive a $50 Target Gift Card.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) considers all payments made to research subjects to be taxable income. Your personal information, including your name, address, and social security number, may be acquired from you and provided to UTA’s accounting office for the purpose of payment. If your total payments for the year exceed $600.00, UTA will report this information to the IRS as income and you will receive a Form 1099 at the end of the year. If you receive less than $600.00 total for payments in a year, you are personally responsible for reporting the payments to the IRS.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS
There are no alternative options to participating in the study.

CONFIDENTIALITY
The research team is committed to protecting your rights and privacy as a research subject. All paper and electronic data collected from this study will be stored in a secure location on the UTA campus and/or a secure UTA server for 3 years after the end of this research. All audio recordings will be destroyed as soon as the de-identified transcript is available. Transcripts will be housed on a private UTA OneDrive folder only accessible via password by the research team.

The results of this study may be published and/or presented without naming you as a participant. The data collected about you for this study will be used for future research studies that are not described in this consent form. If that occurs, an IRB would first evaluate the use of any information that is identifiable to you, and confidentiality protection would be maintained.

While absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, the research team will make every effort to protect the confidentiality of your records as described here and to the extent permitted by law. In addition to the research team, the following entities may have access to your records, but only on a need-to-know basis: the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the FDA (federal regulating agencies), the reviewing IRB, and sponsors of the study.
