Members of the gun safety group Moms Demand Action gathered outside the office of New Jersey Senate President Nicholas Scutari, urging him to bring a package of gun safety bills up for consideration. 

Moms Demand Action New Jersey chapter members called on Scutari to fully support Gov. Phil Murphy’s gun safety bill package.  

Those supporting the measures say they will strengthen New Jersey's secure storage laws and implement microstamping technology that can help solve gun crimes.

Murphy proposed eight bills to strengthen gun laws following the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas.

One did pass the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday that calls for expanding liability for gun manufacturers and gives the state attorney general the ability to pursue civil action against a manufacturer that knowingly or recklessly endangers the public health and safety. But the members say statistics say it all. 

“One-hundred and ten Americans die every day by gun violence so and it is now the leading cause of death for children and teens in the U.S.,” says Jenifer Berrier Gonzalez.

There was no specific comment from Scutari on the gathering. In a statement following the tragedy in Texas, he said in part, “Not only do we need stronger laws federally and in other states on access to firearms, but it is time we hold gun manufacturers accountable.”

News 12 Political Reporter Alex Zdan says Scutari has been cool to the governor’s gun control package but says he is keeping an open mind moving forward.
