About the INSPIRE-Math Fellowship

Innovative New Spaces for Practice and Rehearsal in Teacher Education (INSPIRE-Math) is a new fellowship program led by the MIT Teaching Systems Lab (TSL) for all who currently teach or coach math in a district or charter school in Boston for all or part of their day in grades 3-8.

Core Fellowship Activities

Throughout the INSPIRE-Math fellowship, MIT INSPIRE-Math staff and fellows will work together to learn how to create and foster transformative learning experiencing by embedding cutting-edge simulations into a cycle of professional learning. Fellows will develop strong research-based mathematics teaching practice and collaborate with a community of math coaches and teacher leaders across the district to share the best coaching practice.

Fellows attend three-hour monthly fellow meetings throughout the year where educators and coaches play and practice their coaching moves in a simulated environment, collectively examining the affordances and limitations of responses. Teachers and coaches also have an opportunity to create and design their own scenarios, if they are interested.

  1. Once Upon a Time: In this scenario, you are a Grade 6 mathematics teacher that just handed out a warm up activity designed to practice rates and ratios with your class of 12 students. This simulation enables you to practice helping the three groups of students that you have broken your class into with this activity.
  2. Bathroom Makeover: In this scenario, you are a Grade 5 mathematics teacher that just handed out a warm up activity designed to practice Number and Operations with fractions with your class. (Standard: Mathematics.5.NF.B.04 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.) You have broken your students up into groups that have various understandings of the problem. This simulation allows you to practice helping the different groups.
