We, the clergy and laity who make up the movement of resistance and liberation called UMCNextFL, believe in the equality of ALL people. We can no longer sit in silence or complicity while continual acts of systemic and communal racism and violence take the lives and dignity of black persons and people of color. We cannot stand by systems, institutions and relationships that continue to devalue black lives.

For too long, the United Methodist Church has ignored the facts of our racially divided history as a denomination.

For too long, we have too often invested Conference resources in communities of affluence and homogeneity while our historically black churches and neighborhoods were struggling and left in the racist wake of white flight. When we have invested in communities of color, we have often done so with little regard for sustainability and true commitment to success.

For too long, we have ignored the lack of growth and strategic appointments of clergy of color while continuing to elevate white men into positions of power and influence. Though strides have been made in opening opportunities for clergy of color, the resistance faced in local churches is evidence of the continued presence of the dense fog of racism in our midst.

For too long, we have sung the gospels hymns and attributed them only to our personal suffering. We ignored the history of these songs as songs of secret messages of escape and freedom our black siblings were forced to sing to find freedom.

For too long, we have ignored the social holiness and justice issues of poverty, lack of health care, educational inequity, mass incarceration, immigration, affordable housing, and unjust laws and judicial system that have continued to hold back black persons and people of color in our society. We have failed to name such evidence of systemic racism as the “villainy” that John Wesley understood it to be.

For too long, we have accepted creating an image of Jesus and religious institution that supported a white empire structure built on Anglo-Saxon exceptionalism and allowed it to work for some and not ALL its clergy, churches, and communities.

For too long, we have allowed other marginalized groups of people within the church to be pitted against one another in a struggle over the remaining power we have allotted them.

For too long, the church has offered prayers and lament but continues to struggle with changing the institutional structures that continue to diminish the beloved creation of ALL people.

We confess our personal and corporate complicity in such actions.

We ask forgiveness from our siblings of color throughout the church and country.


And because confession must always result in a resolve to change, we commit to the following:

We commit to standing up for anti-racism in our world, our country, our denomination, churches and communities.

We will seek to talk less and listen more.

We seek to be people of scripture that recognizes that when Paul wrote there is no Jew nor Greek, male nor female, slave nor free, he wasn’t calling us to be color blind or gender blind, but demanding that the oppressive, evil caste structures of race, class, culture, and gender used to put power and privilege in the hands of one group were defeated by the cross.

We seek to be people who dialogue and invite expressions of church and organization that represent the diversity of human identity and experience, that people may be educated, and all may be present at every table and equal to one another.

We seek to be a church that begins to tear down the walls that divide us of race and privilege, not only in personal relationships and congregational community, but in systems of church, civic life, and government.

May we work together in sacred covenant, clergy and laity, to continue to become the church who exemplifies the radically inclusive vision of the Kingdom of God, and to “do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.”
