A shooting involving multiple scenes in northern California left at least five people dead, including the shooter. The Tehama County Sheriff's Office said the incident started at a home and moved to Rancho Tehama Elementary School around 8:00 local time Tuesday morning. Rancho Tehama is about 130 miles north of the state capital of Sacramento.Law enforcement said the shooter, who has not been identified, was shot and killed by police. According to the sheriff, the gunman attempted to enter more rooms at the elementary school with the intent of shooting more children but due to the lockdown was not able to harm additional people. A Corning Unified School district employee confirmed there were injuries at the school."Multiple students" were airlifted from the scene according to Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston. Johnston told local media that "multiple shots were fired" that killed at least four people, not including the shooter. Johnston says the shooter "became mobile" by stealing a vehicle on his shooting rampage. The gunman then engaged two police officers in a gun battle. Those officers were able to return fire, killing the gunman. Johnston says the guns used by the shooter have been recovered, including a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns. Neither the two officers, nor any other first responders were injured in the incident. “It was very clear at the onset that we had an individual that was randomly picking targets,” Johnston said. He declined to release the name or exact motive of the shooter. Johnston did say the shooter had previously been known to law enforcement. Ten injured victims were transported to area hospitals, officials said. None of the victims killed in the shooting were children, police said.One student was wounded at the school and another child was shot while driving with a woman, who was also wounded, Johnston said. Five people total -- at least three children -- were taken to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. Three of them have been treated and released, hospital officials said. A 6-year-old and another child are among the injured. The Redding Record Searchlight reports a 30-year-old man was taken to the hospital with gunshot wound to the thigh. Authorities said one of four victims killed by a gunman on a shooting rampage was a neighbor he was accused of assaulting in January.Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said the neighbor had a restraining order against the gunman. He said the neighbor was a woman but gave no other details.The conditions of the hospitalized victims have not been released.Police are investigating at least seven crime scenes. At least 100 law enforcement officers responded to the crime scenes. The children inside the school were moved to a safe location. A man spoke with KNVN and said that his truck was stolen and his roommate was shot and killed by the gunman."He's dead. He didn't make it," the witness said. "For his family and everything, I feel bad, and we'll be there for them."The roommates lived near the gunman, and the surviving witness said that their neighbor had been shooting a lot of rounds recently."The crazy thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines," he said. "This guy has been crazy, and he's been threatening us and everything. I just feel like there maybe should have been more effort put into stopping things like this."California Gov. Jerry Brown offered his condolences for the victims of the shooting. "Anne and I are saddened to hear about today’s violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren. We offer our condolences to the families who lost loved ones and unite with all Californians in grief," Brown said.The Associated Press contributed to this report.
