Montgomery County Police are trying to determine what drove a man to shoot four members of his immediate family before killing himself.

At 12:06 a.m. Monday, a 911 call led officers and paramedics to a two-story redbrick home along the 100 block of Amberleigh Drive in Colesville. The scene, located in the Sherwood Woods subdivision, was horrid.

Based on a preliminary investigation, detectives believe Yong Mun Kim, 57, shot his wife, Sang Yeon Kim, 48, two young children and 22-year-old stepdaughter, and then turned the gun on himself.

Kim and his were wife were pronounced dead almost immediately. The three children were taken to an area trauma center, each in critical condition. By mid-afternoon, police issued an update, noting that Kim's 10-year-old son, Andy, had died. At last check, the 22-year-old appeared to be doing better than the younger daughter.

For seven hours, major crimes detectives processed the interior of the house and searched at least two vehicles parked outside. By sunrise, a bloody medical kit could be seen strewn across a portion of the front lawn. A shattered rear window and sliding glass door was visible in the back.

“In this neighborhood? We haven't had any problem around here for a long time," said Chuan Truong, a retired chemical engineer who lives two doors down.

Truong explained that he heard some noise around midnight. He opened an exterior basement door but did not see anything suspicious and went about his business.

Montgomery County Police records show three individual calls to the Kim residence on January 30, 2017, February 4, 2017, and February 14, 2017. Each call was labeled as a "landlord-tenant dispute;" however, no names were listed in the dispatch logs.

"I just saw it on the TV this morning," a female neighbor told ABC7 while standing in her open garage. "I have seen those kids coming out from the school, playing in their front yard.”

Although most can only currently speculate as to Kim's motive/s, one neighbor made clear that the 57-year-old was either terribly shy or simply did not care to make friends.

"He never had any eye-contact. He would never say 'hi' or 'bye' or anything. I never knew what to make of it. I wish I had said something."
