Call for volunteers: Help us welcome students at a reimagined Convocation event, Aug. 19

To welcome new first-year and transfer students into our community, the College is organizing a reimagined 34th annual Convocation Ceremony, rescheduled from our traditional date on the Friday before classes, to Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 7:30 p.m. (rain date Thursday, Aug. 20).

In accordance with limitations on public gatherings and indoor events due to the pandemic, we are planning this year’s Convocation event as a festive, socially distant, outdoor parade welcoming new students into our community. Our goal for this annual program remains the same: to provide a memorable, celebratory experience that welcomes our incoming residential, commuter and transfer students into the New Paltz community.

We are inviting faculty and staff to participate in this celebration as marchers in our Convocation parade. The procession will be organized so that all participants can maintain a minimum of six feet of social distance, consistent with public health guidelines, and we are seeking a minimum of two people per department to have representation across campus.

Participation is first come, first serve and registration must be completed by Wednesday, Aug. 12, if you would like us to create signage identifying your department. You may also be creative and design your own sign.

Marchers will be asked to gather on Aug. 19 (rain date Aug. 20) for a lineup at 7 p.m. in the Facilities parking lot. All participants should please wear face coverings and are encouraged to wear orange and blue clothing and other New Paltz gear appropriate for late summer evening weather.

The parade will run from the Service Building to the Old Main Quad. The Department of Residence Life will organize “pods” of 50 students at various outdoor locations along the parade route to safely watch the procession while maintaining social distance. Students will be expected to wear face masks or other coverings and maintain at least six feet of social distance.

A small number of Gem cars will be available with drivers to accommodate volunteers who are interested in participating in the procession but may be unable or uncomfortable walking the full distance.
