The environment plays a significant role in the health and well-being of people experiencing homelessness. In many cases, the environment contributes to the stress and re-traumatization of individuals, while restricting participation in necessary daily activities and healthy connections. However, the environment also presents a significant opportunity to begin the process of healing. #MedicalRespite care programs are centered in the health care and housing continuums — offering opportunity for rest, healing, and connection. Creating trauma-informed spaces within medical respite programs enables the healing process and allows opportunity for people to feel safe and begin to address multiple health and housing needs. Please welcome Julia Gaines to the Medical Respite Team! Julia joins us as a senior manager after years of closely working with NIMRC as a respite provider in Petaluma, Calif. She has spoken as a panelist for NIMRC and NHCHC and is featured on some of NIMRC's online courses! Julia lives in Sonoma County, Calif., with her husband Todd and their "road dog" McNab. Please help us welcome Beau Antonelis to the Medical Respite Team! Beau joined us in November 2023. As the team's coordinator, he provides support in scheduling, note taking, and tracking tasks related to the team as a whole. Beau has 10 years of experience working with people who use drugs and people experiencing homelessness, as well as a year working in a medical respite program in Olympia, WA. He is extremely grateful for his time providing direct service and is excited to be a part of NIMRC. Beau lives in Washington state on Vashon Island, meaning that there are now three medical respite team members on the west coast and one in each state! Beau loves being outside and birdwatching. The team is so excited to have such an energetic, organized, and experienced addition to the team. Thank you, Beau!
