SCOSA NEWS AND EVENTS

SCOSA’s Popular Successful Aging Festival Returning in May

Save the Date for Tuesday May 23, 2023 in the Campus Center at the Galloway Campus

We are pleased to announce the return of SCOSA's Annual Successful Aging Festival after COVID-19 related cancellations in 2020, 2021, and 2022. The Festival Theme will coincide with the national Older Americans Month Theme: Aging Unbound, "offers an opportunity to explore diverse aging experiences and discuss how communities can combat stereotypes. Join us in promoting flexible thinking about aging – and how we all benefit when older adults remain engaged, independent, and included."   The daylong event will include a keynote presentation and/or panel, breakout sessions, a large exhibit hall and other engaging and informative sessions. Details, including sponsorship, advertising, exhibiting and volunteer opportunities will soon be shared on SCOSA's Annual Festival page. Programming updates will be shared in upcoming e-newsletters as the program committee's plans proceed.

SCOSA’s Mourns the Passing of Two Special Friends

We are sad to report the recent passing of two individuals who have played important roles in our work.

Cynthia Graham, gifted writer/educator, winner of Stockton's Mimi Schwartz Award for Creative Nonfiction in 2012, and longtime leader of SCOSA's Time -to-Tell: Tapping the Source - Healing Our Wounds monthly creative non-fiction writing group passed at home on December 8, 2022 after a long illness.  An anthology of the group's work was published in 2017.  Last spring, Cynthia and other SCOSA leaders assisted undergraduate psychology major Nicole White's successful Project for Distinction project, titled "Diverse Benefits of Guided Autobiography (GAB) for Older Adults." We extend our heartfelt condolences to Cynthia's husband Don Graham and her other loved ones.  The group will raise a glass to toast Cindy and wish her well on her next journey at their next monthly meeting.  Cynthia's obituary is available
from this link.

Elizabeth Elmore, Ph.D., Stockton professor of economics and gerontology, founding member of Stockton's Gerontology Minor, Women's Studies Minor, and campus and community leader in so many other capacities, passed while on vacation in Hawaii on December 28, 2022. Elizabeth was a founding member of the Stockton faculty, and served for 50 years.  Stockton President Harvey Kesselman noted that "She was a Stockton treasure who always had time to share a story and laugh, and she never hesitated to ask probing questions when discussing issues of significance. Betty was a wonderful colleague who was deeply committed to our students and her colleagues."

Soon after her arrival at Stockton in 1972, Betty worked with other faculty to establish our Gerontology Topical Concentration, which later became a Supporting Studies and then a Certificate and Minor.  Betty, the first female graduate student in economics at the University of Notre  Dame, was also a founding member of Stockton’s Women’s Studies minor, and more recently director of the Stockton Center for Economic and Financial Literacy (SCEFL)

Over the years Betty was coordinator of GERO more than once and always a trusted advisor and advocate for others who took on that role.  She added gerontology to her official title in 2007 and the GERO program that she continued to nurture was designated as a Program of Merit in 2012 by the Association (now Academy) for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) She is pictured with SCOSA assistant director Christine Ferri (left) and director Dave Burdick (right) in receiving the designation from AGHE.  She later served on the Executive Committee from 2014-2016. Previously she served on AGHE’s K-12 committee, where she helped to establish and then managed AGHE’s Book Award for Children’s Literature, which recognizes positive portrayals of older adults in children’s literature.

In December, 2018 Elizabeth was instrumental in encouraging Stockton to join the Age Friendly University Global Network, as New Jersey's first member.  Subsequently the network has grown significantly, and Stockton via SCOSA has been actively engaged in efforts to make Stockton more age friendly for students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni. In 2015, to support the Stockton Center on Successful Aging (SCOSA), Elizabeth and her husband Dr. Richard Elmore established the Frances Leonilda Acerra Christopher Memorial Endowed Fund in honor of her mother who died at age 101.  Elizabeth’s long-term leadership, inspiration and support will sustain us moving forward.  We extend our deep condolences to Richard and their loved ones.  Stockton will hold a memorial service for Dr. Elmore on Tuesday February 7, 2023 at 4:30pm in the Campus Center Board of Trustees Room.

Age Friendly University (AFU) Update
by Karen Rose, Ph.D., SCOSA AFU champion; adjunct professor, Psychology and Health Science

Age-Friendly-University champions David Burdick (Director of the Stockton Center on Successful Aging) and Karen Rose gave a presentation to new faculty at a workshop hosted by the Stockton Center for Teaching and Learning Design (CTLD). This annual event has been helpful in forging connections with new faculty and discussing ways the AFU lens can enhance creativity in teaching, scholarship, and service. This month, we also joined efforts with the University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion by linking resources:  the Stockton Center on Successful Aging E-News which includes a regular column on Age-Friendly University initiatives is now included in the university’s “Celebrate Diversity” Digest: https://stockton.edu/diversity-inclusion/resources-diversity-inclusion.html.

Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group moves to Tuesdays, Welcomes New Participants

SCOSA's weekly Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group continues to grow and always welcomes new participants.  The program, funded federally through the Atlantic County Office on Aging, invites attendance either in-person in the Stockton Campus Center, or via Zoom.  The program continues to grow and thrive, which involves a brief lecture, Q&A, and support discussions. In Spring 2023, the group will meet on Tuesdays from 12-1pm and is led by SCOSA service chair, Dr. Christine Gayda-Chelder, our Assistant Director, Dr. Christine Ferri, and other guest speakers. Upcoming topics include Self-Care for Caregivers, Managing Challenging Behaviors and Wandering, and Strategies for Joyful Holiday Celebrations.

SCOSA Accepts Donations to Continue to Grow Programming

The next time you attend an enjoyable event hosted or sponsored by SCOSA on campus (e.g. PAC performances, poetry, etc.), in Manahawkin, Hammonton, Cape May or even online, please consider making a donation. SCOSA accepts donations year round. Please see the bottom of our homepage (www.stockton.edu/scosa) for ways to give.

Student Food Pantry Donations Needed

Did you know that Stockton has student food pantries on the Galloway, Atlantic City, and Manahawkin Sites?  There are many students that do not have all of the resources needed to be successful, specifically food.  When you attend any of our programs, we would be happy to collect food and/or personal care donations.
The Manahawkin Food Pantry has specifically requested: canned soup, granola bars, packets of oatmeal, canned of tuna, and microwavable macaroni and cheese.  Please contact Gina.maguire@stockton.edu with any questions.

WELCOME BACK NEWS FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY

While our core staff (and some of our faculty colleagues) have worked diligently throughout the winter break, we 'welcome back' our students and faculty colleagues who have been away. Classes start on Tuesday, January 17th.

We have several developments to share:

1. Welcome SCOSA's New Graduate Intern

SCOSA is pleased to introduce Alyssa Frencer as our new Graduate Intern for the spring semester. Currently in her first year in the Master of Social Work program at Stockton, Alyssa received Associate's degree while in high school, and 2 years later received her BA in Psychology with a concentration in Mental Health at Stockton. Her goal is to earn an MSW Degree and then become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. In her application, Alyssa noted, "My biggest accomplishment so far has been collecting over 300 food donation bags for "Angels In Motion," which we distributed to people experiencing homelessness in Atlantic City this past December. Social work is a very important profession in my opinion, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to live my dream." Alyssa will assist SCOSA in a variety of our programs, including at the NJGWEP in Egg Harbor City.

2. SCOSA Hiring Student Fellows
SCOSA seeks one or two Student Fellows to work with us  (6-10 hours per week) on various program initiatives.  We are particularly interested in students who can assist with our Older Adult Education, Socialization & Recreation Programs, and in our involvement in the New Jersey Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (NJGWEP) where students in small interdisciplinary teams conduct basic health screenings and then develop care plans for older adults living in senior housing complexes in Egg Harbor City and Pleasantville. To learn more about SCOSA please visit www.stockton.edu/scosa.  Hours can be flexible and specific responsibilities would be crafted to utilize the student's talents and experiences and to help them to develop as a professional.  While GERO Minors, students who have taken one or more GERO courses, or those with prior experiences working with older adults are preferred, all are invited to apply. To apply, submit your letter of interest and resume by e-mail to SCOSA Director David Burdick at David.Burdick@stockton.edu.

3. Stockton's Gerontology Minor and Spring Gerontology Course Schedule

Stockton's Gerontology Minor is a great way to prepare for a career in aging. Information about the minor can be found by Clicking Here.  During the Spring 2023 Semester, the program offers several courses. Due to changes negotiated by the Stockton Federation of Teachers (SFT) and the Stockton administration, the title will be changed to "Faculty Associate." The extended appointment will allow Dr. Wei to further develop several projects she has started with SCOSA. Dr. Wei  is an associate professor of Computer Science in the School of Business and affiliated faculty for Master of Science in Data Science & Strategic Analytics at Stockton University. She has been a visiting professor at Columbia University and visiting research fellow at the National Library of Medicine. 5. Call for Applications for Faculty Research Scholars Coming Soon
SCOSA expects to make $10,000 to $14,000 available for faculty-led research on aging available for faculty researchers for the coming fiscal year (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024).  Please be on the look-out for the R&PD Main Round Funding Cycle.  E-mail David.Burdick@stocktont.edu if you have questions or want to discuss potential projects.  See our Research Page at www.stockton.edu/scosa for a list of past funded projects.
