Stockton Earns Key NJAC Win 82-77

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (12-2, 7-1 NJAC) played a strong second half and captured an 82-77 victory over Kean University (13-2, 6-2 NJAC) on Wednesday night.  Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) led three Ospreys in double figures with a season-high 21 points.

The Cougars took control in the first half, jumping out to a lead as many as nine at 31-22 with 6:51 left in the first stanza. Stockton put on a 13-2 run over the next 3:21 to take a short-lived 35-33 advantage with 3:30 remaining in the opening half, but the visitors answered with a finishing spurt of 11-3 to take a 44-38 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Ospreys came out of the intermission shooting well to take control of the contest. Baskets by Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) and Jonathan Azoroh (Ewing/Ewing), coupled with a three-pointer by DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) and another pair of three-balls by Flanders gave Stockton a 50-48 lead with 13:50 to play.

Three-pointers by Campbell and Flanders, plus another hoop by Dawkins pushed the lead to 61-54 in favor of the home team at the 9:04 mark of the second half. Flanders continued his hot shooting in the frame with another from behind the arc before Stockton clinched the game at the foul line.

In the final 3:59, the Ospreys made 11-13 foul shots, sandwiching a basket by Flanders to offset a trio of threes by the Cougars to set the final score at 82-77 for Stockton.

Dawkins and Campbell added 15 points each with Dawkins dishing a game-high five assists. Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) gave the team a spark with a team-leading eight rebounds and tied Dawkins with five helpers. The Ospreys were playing with heavy hearts as the team honored long-time assistant coach Bob Hutchings, who passed away yesterday, before the game.

Kean was led by Griffin Barker and Letrell West who scored 25 points apiece, with Griffin pulling down a game-high 20 rebounds.

Stockton will play on Saturday afternoon for their next game, as the Ospreys will face New Jersey City in Jersey City. Game time is scheduled for 3 pm.
