  • We’re back with Part 2 of our Autism Acceptance Month series: “Stimming Looks Like This: The Power of Stims.” In this final video, Katie Radecki, Program Director & Jeremy Harris, Sr. Day Supervisor from our ArtsWork Day Programs, continue exploring the many ways stimming shows up in everyday life. Stimming - short for self-stimulatory behavior, helps regulate emotions, process sensory input & provide comfort. And just like in Part 1, we’re diving into common types of stimming we see in our programs to help raise awareness & build understanding. _____ This video highlights: - Vestibular: movement-based behaviors like twirling, tapping, & pacing to regulate anxiety or excitement - Visual: self-soothing through visual input like rearranging objects, focusing on reflections, or repeating gestures like a thumbs up - Auditory: behaviors related to sound, like echolalia (repeating words or phrases), humming (not echolalia), or repeating certain noises _____ As Katie says, “Stimming comes in so many forms & it’s important to understand that stimming is not a one-size-fits-all. It’s a natural response to emotions & stimulation & does not need to be suppressed.” _____ **These examples reflect stims we commonly see among the people we support. Stimming is highly individual, & behaviors may look more or less intense than what is portrayed in this video series** Thank you for joining us in spreading acceptance & understanding - because "Stimming Looks Like This". #PeopleInc #BuffaloNY #RochesterNY #Stimming #Stims #Autism #AutismAcceptanceMonth #AAM2025 #AutismStims #SelfStimulatoryBehavior #WhereYourWorldOpensUp

  • April is Autism Acceptance Month! We’re excited to share a special video series: “Stimming Looks Like This: The Power of Stims” - feat. Katie Radecki, Program Director, & Jeremy Harris, Sr. Day Supervisor from our ArtsWork Day Programs. "Stimming" is short for Self-Stimulatory Behavior. Stimming is something we ALL do in our own unique ways. It can provide comfort, help with focus, or offer a sense of calm in overwhelming situations. Katie shares, “The goal is to make the public aware of these behaviors when they see them out in public & help them understand it’s nothing to be afraid of, because we all stim in our own unique ways.” ____ In Part 1 of our series, Katie & Jeremy demonstrate different types of stims to help the community better recognize & understand them. We explore: - Tactile: “Repetitive behaviors that involve the sense of touch” like rubbing fidgets, textures, or skin for comfort - Olfactory: behaviors involving smell, like sniffing a personal item for comfort or security - Gustatory: behaviors involving taste, like chewing to self-regulate, ease boredom, or seek comfort - Vestibular: behaviors involving movement & balance, like hiking up pants, head bobbing, or rocking, often when feeling tense or anxious _____ **These examples reflect the stims we commonly see among the people we support. Stimming is highly individual & behaviors may look more or less intense than what is portrayed in this video series** Stay tuned for Part 2 coming soon! #PeopleInc #BuffaloNY #RochesterNY #Stimming #Stims #Autism #AutismAcceptanceMonth #AAM2025 #AutismStims #SelfStimulatoryBehavior #WhereYourWorldOpensUp
