Kittens are highly intelligent animals that, just like their canine counterparts, are capable of learning a variety of behaviors. Beginning your training as soon as you bring your kitten home will help prevent unwanted behaviors and ensure that your kitten will grow up to be a well-adjusted member of your family.
Kitten training can start with a simple behavior. In this video, KPA CTP Fiona MacIntosh is teaching a kitten to follow a target—in this case, her hand. When the kitten follows her hand, Fiona clicks (she is using a verbal click) and delivers a treat. Note how attentive and enthusiastic the kitten is! Once your kitten learns to target, you can use this behavior to call the kitten to you, have her come off the counter or go into or come out of a carrier, and more!
