Stockton Holds On for 51-45 Victory

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-2, 2-2 NJAC) opened a big lead but had to hold on for a 51-45 win over Rutgers-Newark (2-6, 0-3 NJAC) on Wednesday afternoon. Adriyana Jennings (Camden/Winslow Twp.) led the Ospreys with her sixth double-double of the season, registering a career-high 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

The Ospreys started slowly as the Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead. The visitors defense held Stockton to just 3-11 (27.2%) including an 0-4 mark from behind the arc to gain the margin. Stockton posted the first two points of the game before Rutgers-Newark rattled off nine straight points, before settling for the eight-point advantage after one period.

The Ospreys rebounded in the second quarter closing to 23-20 after outscoring the Raiders 12-7. Stockton upped their defense holding the visitors to just 18.1% (2-11) shooting in the frame. Jennings led the way with 10 points and eight rebounds after 20 minutes of play.

Coming out of the break, Stockton turned up the pressure. Rutgers-Newark scored the first three points to make it 26-20 at 9:24 of the third quarter. The Ospreys ran off 18 of the next 20 points to take a 38-28 advantage. Jennings scored 10 markers with Skylar Fowlkes (Vineland/Vineland) tallying the first four points of her career to spur the run.

Rutgers-Newark would not fold as they turned the momentum around to make the contest close. A three pointer by Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) pushed the lead to 47-32, with 4:56 to play, before the Raiders made one final push. A 19-4 run came up just short as time ran out and Stockton captured the 51-45 victory.

Jennings was the only Osprey in double figures, but she had help on the glass as Fowlkes and Madison Dulude (Sewell/Washington Twp.) pulled down seven rebounds each, as Stockton held a 49-33 margin on the glass.

It was a career-high for the freshman Fowlkes with six coming on the offensive glass. Fathi and
Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) pilfered three steals each with Morrone dishing a game-high four assists.

Syncere Lambert came off the bench to lead the visitors with 14 points, with teammate Ebony Odom Barnes adding 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Stockton will finish the short two game home stand with a matchup against William Paterson on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 1 pm.
