Women's Tennis Claims 17th Consecutive WIAC Title

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team claimed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title for the 17th consecutive season Sunday. The title is the program's 24th overall.

The league championship is determined by using a combination of the regular-season dual-meet standings and the WIAC championship results with the regular season results accounting for one-third of the criteria. The Warhawks were a perfect 6-0 in dual meets this season to lead the league with seven points heading into the championship. UWW added 14 championship points for a total of 21 to claim the title. UW-Eau Claire was second (18) followed by UW-La Crosse (15), UW-Oshkosh (12), UW-Stevens Point (9), UW-River Falls (5) and UW-Stout (4). 

The championship wrapped up Sunday with the final rounds of both singles and doubles competition. For the second consecutive season, the Warhawks claimed five of six singles titles and at least two doubles flights.

At No. 1 singles, top-seeded Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) registered a pair of wins to secure the championship. She defeated Tristan Jantz (UWSP) 6-0, 6-1 in the second round before topping UWL's Tasha Bailey 6-2, 6-2 in the title bout. Lee is now a two-time league champion in singles play -- she won the No. 3 flight a season ago. 

Top-seeded Gracie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) rolled through the No. 2 singles flight. She topped Quinlyn Mack (UWSP) 6-2, 6-0 in the second roundd and the two-seedd Samantha Fuchs (UWEC) 6-3, 6-1 for the championship. 

Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) was the runner-up at No. 3 singles Sunday. She took down Shelby Roth (UWL) 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the title match against top-seeded Anna Lee of UWEC. Ha took the opening set 6-3 but Lee evened the match in set two 6-4. The tiebreak saw Lee come away with the title 10-4. 

At No. 4 singles, Molly Asfeld (Waukesha, Wis./West) picked up a pair of wins Sunday to claim the title. She topped Jameson Gregory (UWO) 6-1, 6-2 in the second round and Hannah Cady (UWL) 6-2, 6-3 for her first singles championship. 

The No. 5 singles bracket also saw a Warhawk name written on the championship line. Alex Repplier (Champlin,MN/Champlin Park) went into the tournament as the number two seed. She defeated UWL's Kate Townsend 6-3, 6-0 before taking down top-seeded Liz Herzog (UWEC) 7-5, 6-1 in the final. 

MacKenzie Lindow (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) rounded out the singles brackets with another title for UWW. She defeated Hannah Stitt (UWO) 6-0, 6-1 to claim a spot in the championship. Lindow battled for the title coming back from a 6-4 first set loss to win 7-5 (10-2). 

In doubles play, Lee and Gracie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) took the No. 1 doubles title with an 8-2 win over UWL's duo of Roth and Cady. The title is the second straight No. 1 doubles title for Lee - she paired with Autumn Bruno (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield Whitnall) to win the championship a season ago. 

Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) secured a second consecutive No. 2 doubles title, this time partnering with Asfeld for an 8-6 win over UWL's Bailey and Lindow. 

The Warhawk duo of Lindow and Repplier finished with bronze at No. 3 doubles after defeating UW-Stevens Point's Steier and Henes 8-6. 

Day One Recap
The first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship wrapped up with two UW-Whitewater doubles duos reaching the finals. The championship will conclude Sunday with place matches and titles awarded for both singles and doubles competition. 

At No. 1 doubles, Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) and Gracie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) received a first round bye as the top seed in the tournament. They defeated Tristin Jantz and Jordan Scharf (UWSP) 8-0 to claim their spot in the championship where they will take on La Crosse's duo of Shelby Roth and Hannah Cady, the three-seed. 

In the No. 2 doubles flight, Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) and Molly Asfeld (Waukesha, Wis./West) also received a bye as the top seed. The pair topped Quinlyn Mack and Chloe Leithold (UWSP) in a close 8-6 match to advance to the title. In Sunday's championship, Ha and Asfeld will face the third-seeded Tasha Bailey and Lauren Lindow from UWL. 

The Warhawks' No. 3 doubles pairing of MacKenzie Lindow (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and Alex Repplier (Champlin,MN/Champlin Park) came into the tournament seeded third. They swept Chloe Struss and Tegan McFarlane (UWRF) 8-0 in the first round. Lindow and Repplier battled it out against the two-seed in round two, but fell to UWEC's Anna Lee and Liv Herzog 8-7(3). 

Saturday featured only the first round of singles play. With UWW claiming the majority of the top seeds, four Warhawks claimed first round byes including Lee, Gracie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd), Asfeld and Lindow in the No. 1, 2, 4 and 6 flights. 

Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd), the number two seed in the No. 3 singles bracket, defeated UW-Stout's Lexie Stein 6-2, 6-2. She'll face Shelby Roth (UWL) in the second round. At No. 5 singles, Repplier, also the two seed, topped Grace Aerts (UWRF) 6-0, 6-1. She advances to face UWL's Kate Townsend in round two. 

UW-Whitewater, the 16-time defending champion, returns to the courts at Nielsen Tennis Stadium Sunday for the final two rounds of singles followed by the conclusion of doubles play. The team title is determined by using a combination of the regular season dual-meet standings and the WIAC Championship results. With a perfect 6-0 record in dual meet competition this season, the Warhawks went into the championship with seven points. The championship results will account for the final two-thirds of team points in determining a team champion.
