Ping Chong + Company's 2016 Summer Theatre Institute

The Ping Chong + Company Summer Institute is designed to engage and inspire artists, teachers, students, and community practitioners interested in developing unique performance projects that explore oral history, art, and community engagement. This intensive week-long workshop, led by Ping Chong, Sara Zatz, and Ryan Conarro, will explore the innovative community-based performance and documentary theatre practices of Ping Chong + Company.

 During this one-week intensive, participants will:
Learn the history of Undesirable Elements and the process of creating an ensemble-based oral history work;
Learn how to conduct interviews and develop original script components based on the Undesirable Elements process;
Learn techniques for working in schools and with youth to develop personal narratives in theatrical form;
Learn strategies to build relationships with community organizations;
Experience Master Classes with Ping Chong, exploring the aesthetics and social justice issues of his multidisciplinary works such as COCKTAIL, BLIND NESS and THE EAST WEST QUARTET.

KEY INFORMATION:

APPLICATION – Participation is by application. Applications will be accepted by email only until April 17th, 2015. Notification of acceptance or non-acceptance will be by email on or before May 11th, 2015. A wait -list for a limited number of applicants will be established. Wait-listed candidates will be notified immediately by e-mail and/or phone if a place in becomes available.

WORKSHOP FEE - The 2016 Workshop fee is $750. Limited financial aid is available

HOUSING/MEALS - Housing and meals are the sole responsibility of the participants.

DAILY SCHEDULE/LOCATION - Workshop hours are 10am-6:00pm. There will be some required independent evening sessions/assignments. All sessions will take place at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, Long Island City, NY. Participants MUST commit to attending the entire week and all sessions.
