MONTHLY COLUMN by Michaelle Cooke, SCOSA TES

Stockton University requires students to perform Service Learning.  According to the Stockton Service Learning website, “... Service-Learning ... is a way of engaging with the community, learning about the environment we live in and move through, and applying the theoretical knowledge of what students are learning in the classroom in real-life situations...”  At the beginning of the Fall semester, SCOSA contacted the School of Exercise Science to encourage their students to work with SCOSA for their service learning projects.  We’ve had two groups work with us, one providing exercise classes on Zoom that have been recorded and can be accessed in the future, and one leading walks and providing exercise information.  The experience has been great for all involved.  Please contact Michaelle.Cooke@stockton.edu to access the recorded exercise sessions.

Stockton Age Friendly University (AFU) Update

by Karen Rose, Ph.D., SCOSA AFU Champion; Adjunct professor, Psychology and Health Science

In November, Dave Burdick and I attended several sessions on age inclusivity in higher education as part of the Gerontological Society of America's Virtual Annual Conference and Scientific Meeting.  A particularly thought-provoking session connected the Age Friendly University initiative to a much broader initiative titled Reframing Aging, a long-term social change endeavor designed to improve the public’s understanding of what aging means and the many ways that older people contribute to our society. This greater understanding will counter ageism and guide our nation’s approach to ensuring supportive policies and programs for us all as we move through the life course.  (To learn more, click here.)

On Wednesday, November 17th, Dave and I were guest speakers in the New Faculty Workshop sponsored by the Stockton Center for Teaching and Learning Design. We spoke about SCOSA, Age-Friendly Universities & Working with Age-Diverse Students with Stockton's six new faculty members this year.  The faculty represent diverse fields, including Africana Studies, Biology, Business, Economics, Marine Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Social Work.  Dave and I highlighted how age inclusivity and intergenerational service learning may be of value to them in their teaching, scholarship, and service, and Dave noted Stockton faculty from their disciplines who have been involved with SCOSA in a variety of ways since SCOSA's inception.
