Stockton Nips Salisbury on Campbell’s Layup at the Buzzer

Salisbury, Md. – Stockton University (3-0) made the long trip south to Salisbury University (1-3) and came away with a thrilling 82-80 victory on a full-court dash and layup by DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) at the buzzer. The win was Stockton's third straight to open the season.

Kyion Flanders shot 8-16 (50%) from three-point range and scored a career-high 30 points for the Ospreys. Campbell finished with 24 points as the duo combined for 54 of Stockton's 82 markers. Campbell also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Salisbury called timeout with 8.1 seconds remaining and the game tied 80-80 to set up a play for the last shot. Gary Briddell drove to the basket but solid defense by Jonathan Azoroh (Ewing/Ewing) allowed Campbell to reach in and grab the ball with 3.7 seconds on the clock.

Campbell then raced up the court and laid the ball over the front of the rim as time expired to give Stockton the dramatic 82-80 triumph. The ending was a fitting conclusion to a game that was close throughout, with 10 ties and eight lead changes.

Earlier, a free throw by Azoroh with 3:44 on the first-half clock gave Stockton a 46-38 lead that proved to be the largest margin of the game. The Sea Gulls answered with an 8-2 run to close within 48-46 at the half.

The first stanza was about as close as it could be in terms of score (48-46), field goal percentage (Stockton 48.6%, Salisbury 48.5%), free throw percentage (Salisbury 90.9%, Stockton 88.9%), rebounds (Salisbury 18, Stockton 17), assists (eight apiece) and steals (three apiece).

Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) made a layup 93 seconds into the second half to give the Ospreys a 52-46 edge that would be their largest until the closing minutes. Luciano Lubrano (Ocean City/Ocean City) later hit a three-pointer with 3:34 to play that equaled the six-point bulge at 80-74.

Salisbury rallied with three straight baskets while Stockton went 0-3 from the floor and committed two turnovers in the next three minutes. The Sea Gulls tied the game 80-80 on a layup with 43 seconds left. A missed jumper by Azoroh was followed by an offensive rebound but then a turnover that gave the ball back to Salisbury.

Stockton needed to make a last stand to prevent defeat. Instead, the Ospreys got strong defense by Azoroh and a clutch play by Campbell to earn the 82-80 victory.

Briddell paced Salisbury with 28 points followed by Jordan Oates with 24 markers and Sean Carr with 17 points.

Stockton will have nearly a week off before starting NJAC play with its home opener against Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday, November 23 at 6 p.m.
