New Paltz, NY — The United Soccer Coaches Association released its regional and national rankings for the fifth time this season and on Tuesday the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team made history with its first national ranking in more than a half century.
The Hawks (10-2 overall, 5-0 SUNYAC), who are coming off a 1-0 double overtime victory on the road against SUNYAC rival SUNY Oneonta, was listed as No. 21 in the nation and second in the region only behind No. 11 SUNY Cortland.
SUNY New Paltz handed the Oneonta Red Dragons their first conference loss of the season and knocked the program from its previous week's No. 5 ranking all the way down to No. 25 in the country, while the Hawks slid up after being unranked to the top-21, including going from fourth in the region to second. Behind Cortland and SUNY New Paltz in Region III was Oneonta, followed by RPI, University of Rochester, RIT, Vassar and Ithaca College.
Up next for the Hawks is a trip to Western New York to face Fredonia State and Buffalo State. The Bengals are currently 10-3 and fifth in the conference, while the Blue Devils are 6-7 with just three points in SUNYAC play, ranking toward the bottom of the league standings.
