Why 'The Dr. Oz Show' is Ending After 12 Years On TV

After more than 12 years on the air, Dr. Mehmet Oz is bringing his self-titled talk show to an end, but it's not the last we'll be seeing of him.

The multi-award-winning talk show started in 2009 but it was recently announced that the final episode of The Dr. Oz Show would air on Friday, January 14, 2022. Dr. Oz taking his talents and his focus away from the world of television and into politics.

Dr. Oz has been vocal about why he's ending the show as he embarks on the next stage of his career.

Why is The Dr. Oz Show ending?

On December 13, 2021, Sony Pictures Television confirmed that The Dr. Oz Show would air its final episode on Friday, January 14, 2022, despite the fact that the show had recently been renewed for two more seasons taking it to 2023.

The show is coming to an end because Dr. Mehmet Oz is running for the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania. He announced his candidacy on November 30 last year.

Since then, television stations in Pennsylvania and its surrounding areas were forced to drop The Dr. Oz Show from their schedules because of the equal-time rule, which states that political candidates be given equal broadcast air-time.

Even The Dr. Oz Show website has had to be altered as Dr. Oz personally owns the doctoroz.com domain name, which he repurposed as his campaign website. Everything from the old website was moved to drozshow.com.

As it stands, Dr. Oz is one of ten people to announce their candidacy for the 2022 senate election in Pennsylvania. Running against Oz is Kathy Barnette, George Bochetto, Jeff Bartos, Sean Gale, Robert "Bobby" Jeffries, David McCormick, Carla Sands, Everett Stern and David Xu. The election will be held on November 8, 2022.

What is replacing The Dr. Oz Show?

Sony Pictures Television are keeping the time slot in the family as Dr. Oz's daughter Daphne Oz is getting her own cooking show.

The Good Dish is a food-themed talk show and will be hosted by Daphne alongside Gail Simmons and Jamika Pessoa.

The Good Dish will launch after The Dr. Oz Show ends, filling in its next designated time slot on Monday, January 17, 2022.

Senior Vice President and General Sales Manager, U.S. Syndication Sales at Sony Pictures Television, Zack Hernandez announced the transition for the new presenting trio will be seamless. "Audiences have been loving what Daphne, Gail and Jamika have been serving up during their weekly segments on The Dr. Oz Show for years," he said. "We have long believed The Good Dish would make an excellent stand-alone series and are delighted to be able to deliver this fresh take on the cooking genre to our station partners and their viewers across the country."
