We write during crisis and disasters for many reasons. To occupy our minds, to cope with our feelings. And, I would suggest, to record what it is like to live through such an experience. As a social historian, I have done a lot of oral history, or remembered  history. Interviewing people about their lives, about specific events or places. And writing about that, always with the sense of urgency – a need to capture the lived experience before those voices are gone.

Born in Ireland but raised in the US, Kelly broke glass ceilings in her lifetime and maintained commitments to Irish matters, as well as activism around other issues. A New York mayor had a New York City playground named after her in the 1930s, but 90 years later her accomplishments had been largely forgotten. This lecture uncovers some of the history of Dr. Kelly as a way to shed light on the concerns of Irish New Yorkers a century ago. Presented by Miriam Nyhan Grey.

SCOSA NEWS & EVENTS

IN REMEMBRANCE

Dr. Jo Frances Christian Stow
SCOSA leaders join the Stockton community in celebrating the life of Dr. Jo Frances Stow, who passed recently.  A former Stockton University faculty member and long-standing Stockton Foundation Board of Directors member, Dr. Stowe served as chair and co-chair of the Foundation’s Scholarship Selection Committee for nearly 30-years.  SCOSA assistant Trish Collins and director Burdick served with Dr. Stow on the Selection Committee, which Burdick co-chaired with Dr. Stowe from 2008-2016. Burdick & Stow severed together on the Southshore Foundation Board of Trustee from 1988 - 1995.  Dr. Stow’s advocacy for Stockton students on that board helped to secure nearly $500,000 in scholarship for students in health sciences and social services, including gerontology minors.  In 2018 the office of Development and Alumni Relations was named for Dr. Stow in recognition of her many years of dedication and service. Stow was an assistant professor of public health from 1979 through 1988. In 1981 she joined the Stockton Foundation Board of Directors and had served continuously as a member, receiving Emerita status in 2016.  Dr. Stow was also a frequent donor to SCOSA. Pictured Above: SCOSA Director, Dr. David Burdick with Dr. Jo Frances Stow, 2014.

Honoring Sisters, Helene Young and Peace Pilgrim

SCOSA mourns the recent passing of Helene Young at age 105.  Helene's sister, "Peace Pilgrim" walked over 25,000 miles on a personal pilgrimage for peace.  After Peace Pilgrim's passing decades ago, Helene helped to carry her sister's mission forward. SCOSA had the pleasure of hosting Helene at our annual festivals, and supported several Peace Pilgrim events, thanks to Barb Reynolds, GERO alum and founder of Stockton's Retiree Association. Helene's favorite Peace Pilgrim quote was, "Do all the good you can each day, the future will unfold."  Helene received the New Jersey Hall of Fame Award on behalf of her sister in May 2017.  View Helene's obituary here: Wimbergfuneralhome-Helene-Young, and learn more about Pilgrim Peace here:  http://peacepilgrim.org/Pictured below on the left is Helene Young and Peace Pilgrim on the right.

GERO COORDINATOR’S COLUMN
by Christine Gayda-Chelder, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, and SCOSA service chair

The Covid-19 pandemic is unfortunately leaving many who have contracted the virus with long-term neurological and neuropsychological deficits. There is much to be learned about how this may impact older adults and the onset of Dementia in years to come. History is repeating itself, as many years ago some children with polio later developed “Post-Polio Syndrome.” Below is a link to an interesting read about this topic from New York- Presbyterian Health Matters, titled, “Can Covid-19 Cause Brain Fog?” Do not hesitate to reach out to me for more about this topic and, as always, information about the Gerontology Minor!  What is causing COVID brain fog? (nyp.org).  We encourage everyone to get Vaccinated as soon as they are eligible and can schedule.
