Dr. Seuss Week of Service is a now a longstanding tradition for the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Ohio State. While Ohio Gamma is a Chapter full of involved Brothers who frequently dedicate their time to a variety of service opportunities and philanthropic efforts, Dr. Seuss Week has become the pinnacle of Brothers serving together.

Dr. Seuss Week is a week dedicated to serving the Greater Columbus community, with an emphasis on promoting widespread children’s literacy and the importance of reading. The week is aptly named after SigEp Brother Dr. Seuss himself (Dartmouth ’25), and concluded on March 2 with a celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, which is also National Read Across America Day. This year the Brothers of SigEp paired with the women of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Recently back on campus with around 200 new members, the ladies of Kappa were very excited to jump in and serve Columbus alongside our Brothers.

This year, the Brothers had a goal of planning more direct service events and expanding our reach in the community. We continued our partnership with 4 of the local Columbus Metropolitan Library branches by reading to children after school as part of their reading buddies program. Many members of both SigEp and Kappa came together to give brief presentations on the history of Dr. Seuss before reading to kids and playing games with them at some of our other partner organizations. These included SON Ministries, After-School All-Stars, and the Gladden community house. Finally, we made blankets and capes to donate to the children who are sick and staying in Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The SigEp A-Team won the Fraternity League intramural basketball championship over business fraternity PSE 49-39.

Congratulations to Jason Littman, who was recognized as a Tragos Quest to Greece Scholar. He will be studying the effects of Greek culture in everyday life from June 14-24 overseas.

Spring Formal was in Nashville, Tennessee, and brothers had a great time hanging out in the hotel, eating hot chicken, and listening to the live music on Broadway Street.

OH Gamma SigEp brought back lots of hardware at the Ohio State Sorority and Fraternity Life Awards including the following honors:

  • Outstanding University Engagement (SigEp Chapter)
  • Outstanding Program (BLSS)
  • Outstanding Member Development (SigEp Chapter)
  • Greek Involvement Award (Jason Littman)

In February, Brothers and their moms spent their Saturday evening out on the town enjoying the annual Mom Prom. Traditionally, this event is both a brother and mother favorite. Throughout the evening, many brothers treated their moms to dinner at a restaurant and enjoyed the sights and sounds of downtown Columbus. The highlight of the evening, Mom Prom, was hosted at Trism, a transformative eatery, bar, and event space located near campus. Mom Prom consisted of great music from all eras, dancing, and a lot of great conversations.

Brother Spotlight

Pelotonia has an annual bike race in Columbus that raises millions of dollars for cancer research. Many of the SigEp brothers have ridden for Pelotonia in their 4 years at Ohio State. Brother Teddy Parsley and his sister, Gracie, ride for a unique reason. Teddy and his family lost their father almost 8 years ago to brain cancer and have ridden ever since. When Teddy arrived on campus, he and his sister founded Team Buckeye Student Riders and began riding with fellow buckeyes to raise money for cancer research. Check out the article below on Teddy and his sister.
This semester Patch Butler has been interning with the Columbus Crew in the position of the Sports Science Intern. Patch is a second year Health Promotion, Nutrition and Exercise Science major. With the Crew, he works with the Strength and Conditioning Coach, Data Analyst, Nutritionist, and High-Performance Director. A typical day involves him helping players with daily exercises in the weight room, assisting the nutritionist in meal prep, and recording all of the data metrics during training.
Congratulations to Chapter President Simon Turner and Jon Mace, who will both be attending the Ruck Leadership Institute this summer in Richmond, Virginia from June 20-24.
