Washington’s Pandemic Recovery Among Best in the Nation

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted nearly every facet of daily life, with no small effect on the job market across the country. At long last, some states are finally starting to recover from the massive job loss that impacted citizens, with Washington State among the top 10 states in its bounce back from the pandemic.

According to a recent national study, initial unemployment claims in our state decreased by 89% for the week of April 26, 2021, compared to the same week last year. This was the fifth-largest decrease in claims, with South Dakota taking the lead with a 94% decrease.

Currently, Washington ranks as the tenth most-recovered state since the pandemic began, with South Dakota, South Carolina and New Hampshire in the top three spots, respectively.

Vermont is ranked as the least-recovered state since the pandemic began, falling behind West Virginia and Alaska.

On the other hand, New York currently holds the top spot for the most recovered state since the week of May 10, 2021, with South Dakota leading in all other categories.

As companies begin to bring workers back to the office and the economy opens up, there is plenty of reason to expect that Washington’s unemployment claims will continue to decrease as the state slowly returns to a pre-pandemic status quo.
