Working remotely with your pets requires a lot of patience, but it could also help you achieve the right work-life balance. Here are some tips for juggling work and pets.
Create a Work Routine Around Your Pet
If your pet is used to you being away for most of the day, it will take some time for them to adjust to your new work schedule. Some new training will probably need to be enforced. If you want your pet to sit quietly while you work, reward their good behavior by giving them an occasional treat or toy. Create a routine for you and your pet to step away from work. Spend some quality time with your pet by having intentional playtime or get some exercise by going for a walk or to the neighborhood dog park.
Set Up A Pet-Friendly Workspace
You don’t want your dog barking, cat meowing, or parrot talking during a conference call or while trying to present a project. Create a special spot for your pet to hang out and relax while you work. Your pet will appreciate the alone time to ease any anxiety or overstimulation they could feel as they adjust to your new work schedule. Consider placing a comfortable pet bed, gate, or kennel near your desk if you can’t let your pet out of sight.

Pets can be costly, so working from home with your pet may be a good way to save money and time. Boarding your pet or taking them to places like doggie day camps may be needed occasionally, but with less frequency when working remotely.
