Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Introduces Legislation To Investigate Hate Group Members Holding and Pursuing Security Clearances

July 17, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi introduced the No Security Clearance for Hate Groups Act as part of the larger effort to end the approval of security clearances for those who are associated with known hate groups. This legislation would have federal agencies establish and maintain a list of hate groups in the United States while requiring the head of each federal agency to make public the number of individuals seeking a security clearance who are affiliated with a hate group, including those who have been approved or denied such clearances.

"Since 2016, the United States has seen a surge of hate group membership and violence coming from hate groups. At the same time, people supporting these extremist views are attempting to gain a foothold in our law enforcement and national security community through federal security clearances," said Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. "This bill will help us to understand the breadth of this problem and just how some of those involved with hate groups were able to gain access to our nation's secrets. Not only is there no law that stops these people from obtaining a clearance today, but there is also no data on how many have been approved for clearances. I hope that my colleagues in the House will consider this legislation and show the American people that our government does not allow people with hateful ideology to have access to our nation's top secrets."
