keldonwarlord0423 oh, this album hurts me. I had a much more complicated review penned, but I finally sat down with a good sound system and played the first track. this one hurts. this is such a keen and authentic presentation of grief that it's hard to put into words. Trez is ripping riffs out of her guitar like sutures from a wound that fails to close, and Casey's drumming is as creative as engulfing as it ever has been. this sound would be impressive from a band twice their size.

Sean Looks like one of my favorite bands has made a soundtrack for the stages of mourning--among other things--the death of the world as we once knew it. Grieving takes time and deserves its due. But like some stoic once said, it is better to leave your grief than have your grief abandon you. Nice to see we have music coming in May to accompany that process

jfkilshaw Mares Of Thrace consistently make records that sound like nobody else and their evolution happens at the speed of a Xenomorph. Casey’s drumming on this one is some of the most inventive you’ll hear all year. These songs are raw and vulnerable, which is a funny thing to say when Tréz’s bark would make Cerberus himself do a little wee. In that vulnerability is strength.

about

Mares of Thrace returns with The Loss, their highly anticipated follow-up to 2022’s The Exile. Known for their masterful fusion of sludge, doom, and blackened post-metal, the Calgary-based duo pushes their sonic boundaries further on this new album, crafting an intense meditation on grief, longing, and resilience. The Loss explores the emotional weight of absence and the raw process of healing, weaving themes of vulnerability and catharsis into every crushing riff and anguished lyric. With their signature blend of heaviness and atmospheric nuance, Mares of Thrace deliver an album that feels as punishing as it is profoundly introspective.

Building on the momentum of The Exile, The Loss showcases a band unafraid to embrace evolution while staying true to their roots. The interplay between searing guitar work and relentless drumming is more intricate than ever, with production that highlights the raw emotion and depth of their sound. The album’s dynamic shifts—from suffocating walls of distortion to moments of eerie stillness—mirror the tumultuous journey through pain and renewal. With The Loss, Mares of Thrace solidify their place as one of heavy music’s most vital voices, delivering an unforgettable work that lingers long after the final note fades.
